YamunaBridges – Delhi Approves Elevated Ring Road With Two New Crossings

YamunaBridges –  Delhi is preparing for a major transport infrastructure upgrade as the city government moves ahead with plans to build two additional bridges across the Yamuna River, aiming to ease traffic pressure and strengthen connectivity between different parts of the national capital.

Yamuna bridges delhi ring road project

The Delhi government has cleared the first phase of the proposed Elevated Ring Road project, a large-scale initiative designed to improve travel across the city. The announcement was made on Thursday by Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, who said the project received approval during a recent government meeting.

Project Designed to Reduce Traffic Congestion

According to officials, the approved phase will cover the stretch between Azadpur and Ashram. As part of the plan, two new bridges will be constructed over the Yamuna at separate locations. These crossings are expected to provide uninterrupted traffic movement and help commuters avoid signal-heavy routes.

The project is intended to address long-standing congestion issues on some of Delhi’s busiest roads. By introducing elevated corridors above existing routes, authorities hope to create smoother travel conditions while reducing pressure on major intersections.

Improved Links Between Key Parts of Delhi

At present, around 25 road and rail bridges span the Yamuna, connecting Delhi with East Delhi as well as neighbouring NCR cities such as Noida and Ghaziabad. Despite this network, growing traffic volumes have continued to place significant strain on existing infrastructure.

Officials believe the addition of new river crossings will strengthen road connectivity between northern and southern parts of the city. The planned infrastructure is expected to offer faster travel options for daily commuters and commercial traffic alike.

Elevated Corridor to Cover 55 Kilometres

The proposed Elevated Ring Road will extend approximately 55 kilometres and is being developed as a long-term solution to Delhi’s transportation challenges. The project aims not only to improve connectivity but also to support more sustainable urban mobility by streamlining traffic flow and reducing delays.

Authorities say the elevated design will make better use of existing road corridors without requiring extensive additional land acquisition. The project is also expected to contribute to lower travel times across several important routes in the capital.

Priority Sections Identified for Early Development

Government officials have identified three stretches that will be developed on a priority basis. These include the 9.5-kilometre corridor from Azadpur Flyover to Hanuman Temple ISBT, a 2.5-kilometre section between Chandgi Ram Akhara and Majnu Ka Tilla, and an 11.5-kilometre stretch connecting Hanuman Temple ISBT with the DND Flyover.

Work on these segments is expected to play a crucial role in creating a continuous elevated traffic network. Once completed, the road will connect the Azadpur Flyover near Mukarba Chowk with the DND corridor, offering a more efficient route across the city.

Focus on Future Transport Needs

The project forms part of the Delhi government’s broader strategy to modernize transport infrastructure and accommodate increasing traffic demand. Urban planners have frequently highlighted the need for additional high-capacity corridors as vehicle numbers continue to rise.

Officials maintain that the Elevated Ring Road, along with the proposed Yamuna bridges, will provide long-term benefits by improving accessibility, reducing bottlenecks and supporting smoother movement throughout the capital region.
