RGKarCase – West Bengal Begins Review of Protest Cases Linked to 2024 Tragedy
RGKarCase –The West Bengal government has started the process of reviewing criminal cases filed against doctors and members of civil society who joined peaceful demonstrations after the 2024 rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to government sources, the administration believes that several of these cases were registered during the previous Trinamool Congress government despite the protests being democratic in nature.

Judicial Commission to Examine Protest-Related Cases
Officials at the state secretariat said the review will be carried out based on the recommendations of a newly formed judicial commission headed by retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Biswajit Basu. The panel has been assigned the responsibility of examining whether legal proceedings were initiated against protesters to discourage public demonstrations or place unnecessary pressure on those demanding justice in the high-profile RG Kar case.
The commission is expected to assess individual cases and determine whether they were justified or whether they were filed primarily to target people who participated in peaceful protests. Based on its findings, the government is likely to begin withdrawing cases considered to be without sufficient grounds.
Investigation Into Hospital Vandalism to Continue
While the government is considering relief for peaceful demonstrators, authorities have made it clear that those accused of violence during the unrest will continue to face legal scrutiny. Police have begun identifying individuals allegedly involved in the large-scale vandalism at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital during the night of August 14, 2024.
Investigators believe the damage to the hospital may have been carried out with the intention of destroying potential evidence connected to the crime and shifting public attention away from the nationwide “Women, Reclaim the Night” protests that followed the incident. The police investigation is expected to focus on establishing the identity of those responsible and determining the motive behind the destruction inside the hospital premises.
Government Reopens High-Profile Case
After the change in government earlier this year, the BJP-led administration announced fresh action in connection with the RG Kar case. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed authorities to reopen the matter, stating that all aspects of the investigation would be examined once again.
As part of this process, three senior IPS officers were suspended. Those placed under suspension include former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Division) Abhishek Gupta, and former Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) Indira Mukherjee. Departmental inquiries have also been initiated to examine their roles and responsibilities during the handling of the case.
Focus on Accountability and Fairness
A senior official at Nabanna said the government’s approach is aimed at balancing accountability with fairness. According to the official, the administration intends to ensure that anyone involved in attempts to weaken the investigation or interfere with evidence is brought to justice. At the same time, people who participated peacefully in public demonstrations should not continue facing legal action if the cases against them are found to be unjustified.
The official added that the review process reflects the government’s commitment to protecting democratic rights while ensuring that those responsible for any criminal wrongdoing are held accountable. The judicial commission’s recommendations are expected to play a key role in determining the next phase of legal action related to both the protests and the broader investigation into one of West Bengal’s most widely discussed criminal cases.
