Hostels – Andhra District Unveils Major Modernisation Drive for Student Welfare Campuses
Hostels – The district administration has introduced an ambitious initiative aimed at upgrading welfare hostels and residential schools for students from disadvantaged communities. Named “Vidya Vasati Vikasam” (Education, Accommodation and Development), the programme seeks to bring all welfare hostels under a unified development framework, creating safer, modern and technology-enabled residential campuses that provide a better learning environment for thousands of students.
Initiative Focuses on Better Living Conditions
District Collector Himanshu Shukla said the programme has been designed to ensure that every student studying in welfare hostels has access to secure, clean and quality residential facilities. According to him, the administration has been working on the project for the past two months with the objective of eliminating infrastructure gaps that often affect students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, Tribal and Minority communities.
The initiative will cover 155 welfare hostels and residential schools across the district. Officials said the project will be supported through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions along with donations from individuals and organisations willing to participate in improving educational infrastructure.
Investment Planned for Infrastructure and Facilities
The comprehensive development programme has been planned with an estimated investment of Rs 34.80 crore and is expected to benefit 19,069 students. Of the total allocation, Rs 20.35 crore has been set aside for repairing existing buildings and strengthening basic infrastructure. Another Rs 14.45 crore will be utilised to provide furniture, educational equipment and other modern facilities required for comfortable residential living.
The planned improvements include renovation of ageing hostel buildings, reliable drinking and running water supply, upgraded sanitation systems, electrical maintenance and several other essential amenities. Authorities believe these improvements will help create a safer and more student-friendly atmosphere while supporting better academic outcomes.
Work to Be Carried Out in Five Stages
Officials have prepared a phased implementation strategy to ensure smooth execution of the programme. The first stage will include obtaining administrative approvals and releasing funds for the identified works. Subsequent phases will focus on assigning projects, carrying out structural repairs, improving water supply systems, upgrading sanitation facilities, completing electrical works and procuring the required equipment and furniture.
The phased approach is expected to help maintain quality standards while allowing regular monitoring of progress across all institutions included in the programme.
District Administration to Monitor Progress
The district administration has established a monitoring mechanism to ensure timely completion of the project. District Collector Himanshu Shukla will directly supervise the implementation process. The District BC Welfare and Empowerment Officer has been designated as the nodal officer responsible for coordinating the programme across departments.
Meanwhile, the Engineering Wing of the Andhra Pradesh Education and Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation (APEWIDC) will oversee project execution, technical supervision and quality control. Officials said this arrangement is intended to ensure that construction standards are maintained and that public funds are utilised efficiently.
With the launch of Vidya Vasati Vikasam, the district administration aims to significantly improve residential education infrastructure for students belonging to weaker sections and minority communities. By combining government efforts with CSR funding and public support, the programme seeks to provide safe, modern and dignified hostel facilities that can contribute to better educational opportunities and an improved learning experience for thousands of students.
