Weather Update – Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Tamil Nadu Amid Heat and Humidity

Weather Update – Several districts across Tamil Nadu are expected to witness significant rainfall on Tuesday, even as many parts of the state continue to face uncomfortable weather due to rising temperatures and humid conditions. The latest forecast issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai indicates a mix of rain-bearing systems and summer-like heat affecting different regions simultaneously.

Tamil nadu heavy rainfall heat alert

Atmospheric System Expected to Trigger Rainfall

Meteorological officials stated that an upper-air trough currently stretches from the Karnataka coast to the Andhra Pradesh coastline. This weather feature is positioned between 3.1 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level and is likely to strengthen rain activity across several areas of Tamil Nadu during the day.

The department noted that this atmospheric development could create favorable conditions for thunderstorms and widespread cloud formation, particularly over western and southern districts.

Ten Districts Under Heavy Rainfall Watch

According to the forecast, isolated locations in the hill regions of Tirunelveli district and the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanniyakumari, Dharmapuri, Salem and Erode may receive heavy rainfall. Weather experts have also predicted thunderstorms, lightning activity and strong winds that could reach speeds of up to 50 kmph in some places.

Residents living in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay alert and exercise caution during periods of intense weather activity.

Moderate Showers Likely in Chennai and Nearby Areas

Apart from the heavy rainfall zones, several northern districts are also expected to receive rain. Moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms may occur at isolated locations in Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Chengalpattu districts.

Authorities have encouraged people to monitor weather updates and avoid outdoor activities during lightning events or sudden storms.

Heat and Humidity Continue Across the State

While rainfall is expected in many districts, the weather department has warned that hot and humid conditions are likely to persist across parts of Tamil Nadu. Maximum temperatures in certain areas could remain as much as three degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.

The combination of higher temperatures and increased moisture in the atmosphere may result in uncomfortable conditions, especially during the afternoon when heat levels typically peak.

Recent Temperature Readings Highlight Ongoing Heat

The rainfall forecast follows a day of intense heat across the state. On Monday, nine weather monitoring stations recorded temperatures above 37.7 degrees Celsius.

Among them, Chennai’s Meenambakkam station registered the highest temperature at approximately 39.4 degrees Celsius. The reading reflects the continued influence of summer heat despite the arrival of weather systems capable of producing rainfall.

Seasonal Transition Behind Mixed Weather Pattern

Meteorologists explained that such contrasting weather conditions are common during seasonal transition periods. During this phase, localized thunderstorms often develop while daytime temperatures remain elevated.

As a result, some areas may experience brief but intense rainfall, while others continue to face heat-related discomfort during daylight hours.

Public Advised to Follow Safety Precautions

Officials have urged residents to remain prepared for changing weather conditions. People are advised to drink sufficient water, limit direct exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day and take shelter during thunderstorms or strong winds.

The weather department continues to closely track developments in the atmosphere and has requested the public to rely on official forecasts and advisories for the latest updates regarding rainfall, temperature and severe weather conditions.
