Weather Update – Delhi Records Coolest June Day Amid Rain and Thunderstorm Activity
Weather Update – Delhi experienced a noticeable change in weather on Friday as widespread rain and thunderstorm activity brought significant relief from the summer heat. According to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures across the national capital fell sharply, making it the coolest day recorded in June so far this year. The weather agency has also predicted continued thunderstorm activity, rainfall, and strong winds across the city through Saturday.

Significant Fall in Daytime and Night Temperatures
At Safdarjung, which serves as Delhi’s primary weather monitoring station, the maximum temperature settled at 34.6 degrees Celsius. This reading was 5.3 degrees Celsius lower than the seasonal average and 4.1 degrees Celsius below the previous day’s temperature. The minimum temperature dropped to 22.8 degrees Celsius, remaining 5.2 degrees Celsius below normal levels and showing a sharp decline of 7.2 degrees Celsius compared to Thursday.
The cooler conditions were reflected across multiple weather stations in the capital, highlighting the widespread impact of the rainfall and cloud cover.
Weather Stations Across Delhi Report Similar Trends
Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 33.5 degrees Celsius, which was 6.7 degrees Celsius below the normal mark. The station also reported a minimum temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius, remaining 6.5 degrees Celsius below average for this time of year.
At Lodhi Road, the highest temperature reached 33.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 22 degrees Celsius. Both readings remained considerably below the expected seasonal levels, indicating a substantial cooling effect across central Delhi.
The Ridge observatory also reported lower temperatures, with the maximum reaching 33.6 degrees Celsius and the minimum dropping to 20.9 degrees Celsius. Weather officials noted that both figures were significantly below normal, continuing the trend observed throughout the city.
Ayanagar Records Largest Departure from Normal
Among the monitored locations, Ayanagar registered one of the largest departures from normal temperatures. The maximum temperature there was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius, which was 8.3 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average. The minimum temperature stood at 22.6 degrees Celsius, nearly 5 degrees Celsius below normal and substantially lower than the previous day’s reading.
Meteorologists attribute the cooling trend to continuous cloud cover, moisture-laden winds, and recurring thunderstorm activity that prevented temperatures from rising during the day.
Rainfall Contributes to Pleasant Conditions
Rainfall measurements also reflected the active weather pattern. Safdarjung recorded 11.2 millimetres of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. The showers helped reduce heat levels and improved overall weather conditions across several parts of Delhi.
The rainfall, combined with gusty winds and overcast skies, created relatively comfortable conditions compared to the intense heat experienced earlier in the month. Residents in many areas reported cooler mornings and evenings following the weather change.
IMD Forecast for the Coming Days
The India Meteorological Department has indicated that thunderstorm activity is likely to continue through Saturday. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds may affect several parts of Delhi and surrounding regions.
Officials have advised residents to remain aware of changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms. The continuing weather system is expected to keep temperatures below normal and provide further relief from the summer heat over the next few days.
