Weather – The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall and strong winds in the Nilgiris on Thursday as a low-pressure trough influences weather conditions across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The system, extending from south Gujarat to central Kerala, is expected to bring intermittent rain to several parts of the state over the next few days.
Nilgiris likely to see intense rain spells
The Nilgiris is expected to receive heavy showers, with gusty winds possible in some areas. The hill district often faces weather-related disruptions during the southwest monsoon, including landslides, tree falls and road blockages when rainfall intensifies.
Officials have advised people living in vulnerable locations to remain alert. Residents in areas with a history of landslides, waterlogging or falling trees have been asked to follow local safety instructions and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
Western Ghats districts may receive moderate showers
Other districts along the Western Ghats are also likely to receive moderate rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Strong winds may accompany showers in isolated places, according to the weather department.
The active southwest monsoon and the trough over the region are expected to increase moisture movement into southern India. This could lead to widespread cloud cover and occasional rain across several districts, although intense rainfall is not currently expected in most plains areas.
Rain activity may continue at intervals in northern and western Tamil Nadu in the coming days. However, the weather office has not indicated a broader spell of heavy rain outside the hill districts at this stage.
Chennai likely to remain cloudy with light rain possible
Chennai is expected to have generally cloudy skies through the day. Light rain may occur in a few parts of the city, the IMD said.
Cloud cover is likely to keep daytime temperatures relatively moderate. Humidity, however, is expected to remain high, which may make conditions feel warmer in some neighbourhoods despite lower direct sunshine.
Commuters and residents may face brief wet spells in isolated areas, especially if showers develop during the afternoon or evening. No major citywide rainfall warning has been issued for Chennai.
Fishermen cautioned over Andaman Sea conditions
The IMD has also issued a marine weather warning for fishermen in the Andaman Sea. Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 55 kmph are likely between July 10 and July 12.
Fishing communities and boat operators have been advised to check the latest weather bulletins before heading out to sea. The department said sea conditions could become rough as winds strengthen during the warning period.
Authorities have urged fishermen to plan voyages carefully and remain in contact with local officials for updated advisories. Weather agencies will continue to monitor the low-pressure trough and related wind conditions, with further alerts to be issued if the situation changes.
