Weather Alert –The Uttarakhand government has temporarily suspended the Char Dham Yatra after persistent heavy rainfall, landslides, and severe weather warnings created unsafe conditions across several sections of the pilgrimage routes. Authorities said the decision was taken to protect the safety of devotees as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued Red and Orange alerts for parts of the state.
Authorities Prioritise Pilgrim Safety
The Garhwal Commissioner has instructed all District Magistrates and concerned officials to make immediate arrangements for pilgrims who are already travelling along the Char Dham routes. Those on the journey are being shifted to secure locations until road conditions improve.
Officials have also been directed to permit further travel only after engineers and local administrations certify that the affected routes are completely safe. The administration stressed that no movement of pilgrims will be allowed unless weather conditions stabilise and travel corridors are restored.
Official Updates to Prevent Misinformation
State authorities have asked district administrations to keep pilgrims and local residents informed through official communication channels. Regular updates are being shared through the media and government advisories so that travellers receive verified information regarding road conditions, weather developments, and the status of the pilgrimage.
The administration has appealed to the public not to rely on rumours or unverified social media posts. Pilgrims have been advised to follow only official instructions and cooperate with local authorities until normal conditions return.
Pilgrimage to Resume After Safety Review
According to the state administration, the temporary suspension is a preventive measure rather than a response to any single incident. Officials said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding thousands of pilgrims visiting the Himalayan shrines during the ongoing yatra season.
The Char Dham Yatra will resume only after authorities complete safety inspections of roads and confirm that travel can continue without unnecessary risk. Weather forecasts and ground assessments will remain the basis for further decisions.
Rising River Levels Raise Fresh Concerns
Continuous rainfall has also affected Rudraprayag district, where water levels in the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers have increased significantly. Officials reported that both rivers are approaching their respective warning levels, prompting enhanced monitoring across vulnerable locations.
The rising water has submerged ghats developed under the Namami Gange project, highlighting the impact of sustained rainfall on riverbanks and nearby infrastructure. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any emergency arising from further increases in river discharge.
Rainfall Data Reflects Worsening Conditions
The district administration reported widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours. Rudraprayag received 22 mm of rain, while Ukhimath recorded a much higher 77 mm. Jakholi also witnessed substantial rainfall, registering 53 mm during the same period.
Latest hydrological observations placed the Alaknanda River at 625.00 metres and the Mandakini River at 624.15 metres, both nearing the established warning marks. Additional readings showed water levels of 799.90 metres in Ganganagar and 1,974.12 metres in Gaurikund, indicating continued pressure on river systems across the district.
Emergency Response Teams Remain on High Alert
The District Emergency Operations Centre has directed all departments to maintain maximum preparedness for any weather-related incidents. Rescue and response agencies remain on alert as intermittent rainfall and dense fog continue to affect visibility and travel conditions in the region.
Residents and pilgrims have been urged to avoid riverbanks, remain cautious while travelling, and follow advisories issued by district authorities. Officials said continuous monitoring will continue until the weather improves and the overall situation returns to normal.
