WaterSupply – Bengal’s New BJP Government Set to Receive Major Central Aid

WaterSupply –  The newly-formed BJP government in West Bengal is expected to begin its tenure with a significant financial boost from the Centre, as the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has approved Rs 2,700 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission programme. The development comes shortly before the oath-taking ceremony of the state’s first BJP-led administration under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Centre Clears Pending Water Project Funds

According to sources familiar with the matter, an official communication regarding the release of funds reached the state secretariat at Nabanna on Friday evening. The amount is expected to be transferred soon after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the state and central governments.

Officials indicated that the financial assistance had remained pending for nearly two years because the earlier Trinamool Congress government had reservations regarding certain conditions attached to the agreement. However, recent discussions between senior officials from the Union Jal Shakti Ministry and the West Bengal Public Health Engineering Department reportedly helped resolve those concerns.

A senior source stated that the state government has now agreed to comply with the conditions required for the release of the funds, paving the way for the implementation of rural drinking water projects across different districts.

Jal Jeevan Mission Expansion Expected in Bengal

The Jal Jeevan Mission was launched by the Central government in 2019 with the objective of providing safe piped drinking water to rural households across India. The programme has since expanded under the JJM 2.0 framework, which is scheduled to continue until 2028.

Government figures released earlier this year showed that more than 15 crore rural households nationwide have already received tap water connections under the scheme. The latest financial clearance for West Bengal is expected to support faster expansion of drinking water infrastructure in villages where access remains limited.

Officials believe the release of funds could accelerate pending projects related to household water connectivity and improve access to safe drinking water in remote areas of the state.

Fresh Talks Begin on Ayushman Bharat Rollout

Alongside the water mission funding, discussions have reportedly started between the Union Health Ministry and the West Bengal Health Department over the possible implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the state.

The centrally-sponsored programme had not been introduced in West Bengal during the previous administration. The Mamata Banerjee-led government had maintained that the state’s own Swasthya Sathi scheme already provided healthcare benefits and made the central programme unnecessary.

With the change in political leadership, officials from both sides are now exploring the possibility of integrating or implementing the national health insurance initiative in the state. Sources said preliminary administrative-level talks have already taken place.

Political Debate Over Central Welfare Schemes

The issue of centrally-funded welfare programmes had become a major topic during the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeatedly criticised the previous state government during campaign rallies for not implementing several Central schemes, including Ayushman Bharat.

The BJP leadership argued that residents of the state were being deprived of benefits available in other parts of the country because of political disagreements between the Centre and the former state administration.

With a BJP government now taking charge in the state, political observers expect closer coordination between Kolkata and New Delhi on infrastructure, healthcare, and welfare-related projects in the coming months.
