WasteManagement – Delhi LG Reviews Progress at Bhalswa Landfill Cleanup
WasteManagement – Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday visited the Bhalswa landfill site to assess the ongoing bioremediation work aimed at reducing one of the capital’s largest waste dumps. The visit focused on reviewing the pace of cleanup operations and identifying areas where efforts need to be strengthened.

Focus on Progress and Remaining Challenges
Officials informed the Lieutenant Governor that while the pace of work has improved in recent years, the scale of the challenge remains significant. Large portions of accumulated waste still need to be processed, and the site continues to require sustained attention.
Sandhu acknowledged the improvements made so far but stressed that the current level of progress is not sufficient to meet long-term environmental and public health goals. He noted that faster and more efficient execution will be essential in the coming months.
Background of Cleanup Initiative
The push to clear Delhi’s major landfill sites gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted Bhalswa, Ghazipur, and Okhla as critical environmental concerns, describing them as massive garbage accumulations that needed urgent removal.
Following this, authorities began large-scale clearance operations in 2022, focusing on bioremediation techniques to process legacy waste. Since then, municipal agencies have been working to reduce the height and volume of these landfill sites.
Officials Present During Inspection
The inspection was attended by Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, along with other senior officials involved in waste management and urban development projects. They briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the current status of operations and future targets.
Discussions during the visit also covered logistical challenges, including waste segregation, machinery deployment, and timelines for completing different phases of the project.
Emphasis on Modern Technology and Expertise
During the review, Sandhu advised officials to adopt advanced global waste management practices to improve efficiency. He encouraged the exploration of international technologies and standards that could help speed up the remediation process.
He also suggested consulting domain experts to ensure that the strategies being implemented are both effective and sustainable in the long run.
Need for Sustainable Waste Management Approach
In addition to clearing existing waste, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the importance of managing fresh waste scientifically. He emphasized that long-term success depends not only on removing legacy waste but also on preventing the accumulation of new garbage.
Officials were directed to strengthen systems for waste segregation, recycling, and disposal to ensure that similar landfill challenges do not arise in the future.
Sandhu reiterated that a balanced approach—combining immediate cleanup efforts with sustainable waste management practices—is crucial for achieving lasting environmental improvements in the city.
