UttarakhandPolitics – The Bharatiya Janata Party has unveiled a new organizational strategy in Uttarakhand as it prepares for future electoral challenges, while the state government is also advancing tourism innovation and aviation infrastructure projects.
The BJP has introduced a significant structural change in Uttarakhand by establishing dedicated core committees for every assembly constituency across the state. The move marks a departure from the party’s traditional approach, where organizational oversight was largely managed through state-level units.
New Committees to Assess Local Political Performance
Under the revised framework, each assembly seat will have its own committee responsible for evaluating political developments at the grassroots level. These panels include Members of Parliament, senior state office-bearers, district-level leaders, former party presidents, mayors, municipal representatives and mandal officials.
The committees have been assigned the task of monitoring the performance of sitting legislators, gathering feedback from residents and assessing the strengths of potential candidates seeking party nominations. The initiative is intended to provide the party leadership with a clearer understanding of local political realities before candidate selection begins.
State BJP president Mahendra Bhatt indicated that elected representatives would be judged on their ability to fulfill commitments made to voters. Leaders who fail to maintain public confidence or deliver on promises could face difficulties in securing party tickets for future elections. The system is also expected to help identify stronger candidates in constituencies where anti-incumbency concerns exist.
Tourism Innovation Receives Appreciation
In a separate development, Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and presented him with a tourism publication titled Ambles Across Godland.
The book highlights several tourism initiatives undertaken in the state, including the transformation of unused bridges into visitor-friendly cafeterias and public spaces. According to officials, the project has helped preserve old infrastructure while creating new attractions for travelers.
During the meeting, Shah reportedly appreciated the innovative concept showcased in the publication. The initiative has been viewed as an example of how existing public assets can be repurposed to support tourism and local economic activity.
Concern Raised Over Border Infrastructure Delays
Maharaj also used the opportunity to draw attention to delays affecting the Banbasa Integrated Check Post near the India-Nepal border. The project is considered important for improving cross-border connectivity and trade movement.
In correspondence addressed to the Home Minister, the tourism minister highlighted the slow progress of the national highway approach road linked to the facility. He noted that transportation challenges continue to affect construction activities.
According to officials, the site is currently connected through a bridge with limited load-bearing capacity, making it difficult to transport heavy machinery and construction materials required for large-scale infrastructure work. The state government has sought faster implementation to ensure timely completion of the project.
Modern Air Traffic Control Facility Planned for Dehradun
Meanwhile, aviation infrastructure in Uttarakhand is also set for a major upgrade. Authorities have approved plans for a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) building at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.
The proposed facility will replace the existing control tower and will be equipped with advanced technology designed to improve operational efficiency. Officials expect the modernization project to enhance the airport’s ability to manage increasing air traffic while strengthening safety standards.
The upgraded ATC system will include modern surveillance and automation tools, enabling controllers to coordinate a larger number of aircraft movements. This is expected to improve both runway utilization and airspace management.
At present, the airport handles approximately two dozen commercial flights daily in addition to private aircraft and helicopter operations. Originally established as a small airstrip in the 1970s, the airport gradually expanded and emerged as a full-fledged aviation facility during the mid-2000s. The latest upgrade is expected to support future growth in passenger and flight operations.
