TransportInfrastructure – Delhi CM Reviews Public Facilities at Key Transport Centres

TransportInfrastructure – Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday carried out a detailed inspection of several Transport Department facilities across Delhi, assessing the quality of public services, infrastructure standards and operational efficiency. During the review, she visited an under-development Automated Testing Station (ATS), the District Transport Office (DTO), a vehicle inspection facility and a training centre for heavy motor vehicle drivers. The visit focused on identifying areas that require modernization and better public amenities.

Progress Reviewed at Automated Testing Station

The Chief Minister began her inspection at the upcoming Automated Testing Station, where officials provided an update on the project’s construction status. According to the department, the facility is being designed to handle vehicle fitness checks through advanced automated systems. Once operational, it will be able to examine five vehicles simultaneously and is expected to process fitness certification tests for nearly 80,000 to 90,000 commercial vehicles every year.

Officials explained that the new system aims to improve testing efficiency while reducing delays in vehicle inspections. The project is expected to play a significant role in strengthening transport regulation and roadworthiness assessments across the city.

Citizens Highlight Lack of Basic Amenities

Later, Gupta visited the District Transport Office located in Burari and interacted directly with people who had arrived for driving licence examinations and related services. During these conversations, several visitors raised concerns regarding long waiting periods outside the office premises.

Applicants reported that essential facilities such as seating arrangements, clean drinking water and adequate waiting areas were either insufficient or unavailable. Many expressed frustration over having to remain outside the building for extended durations before being called for their appointments.

Immediate Directions to Improve Public Convenience

Taking note of the grievances, the Chief Minister instructed officials to address the shortcomings without delay. She expressed dissatisfaction over the inconvenience faced by visitors and emphasized that public offices must provide a comfortable environment for citizens seeking government services.

Gupta directed the concerned authorities and security staff to ensure that applicants are not made to wait outside unnecessarily. She also ordered immediate arrangements for proper seating inside the office premises so that visitors can access services with greater ease and dignity.

Redevelopment Plan Suggested for Entire Complex

While reviewing the overall condition of the District Transport Office campus, the Chief Minister observed that minor repairs alone would not adequately address the existing issues. She stated that a broader redevelopment approach should be explored to transform the facility into a more efficient public service centre.

Officials were instructed to prepare a comprehensive redevelopment proposal covering all major aspects of the complex. The proposed plan should include upgraded citizen facilities, improved parking infrastructure, landscaped green areas, modern administrative buildings and enhanced training facilities. Gupta stressed that the large campus should be utilized more effectively and developed to meet future service demands.

Vehicle Inspection Systems to Be Modernized

The inspection also included a visit to the existing Vehicle Inspection Unit. While acknowledging that the facility continues to function, the Chief Minister noted that several structures and operational systems have become outdated over time.

She directed officials to adopt newer technologies and modern testing mechanisms to improve the accuracy and transparency of vehicle fitness assessments. According to Gupta, technology-driven inspection systems can help ensure more reliable evaluations while strengthening confidence among vehicle owners and transport operators.

The Chief Minister emphasized that upgraded inspection infrastructure would contribute to improved road safety standards and support a more accountable transport administration. The review reflects the government’s focus on enhancing public services and modernizing key transport-related facilities across the national capital.
