Traffic Management – Delhi Records Noticeable Drop in Congestion Across Key Road Corridors
Traffic Management – Traffic movement across several of Delhi’s busiest road stretches has shown a marked improvement over the past few months, according to a review conducted on Monday by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu. During the meeting, he examined the progress of ongoing traffic management initiatives and instructed Delhi Police to further strengthen the use of artificial intelligence-based systems and digital enforcement technologies to enable continuous traffic monitoring throughout the day.
Review Highlights Improvement in Congestion Levels
Officials informed the Lieutenant-Governor that traffic congestion has reduced considerably since measures introduced after a high-level review held on April 2. Data collected using Google Maps at 15-minute intervals showed that the average congestion length across identified locations fell from 48.25 kilometres during the January-March period to 32.43 kilometres between April and June 25. The review meeting was attended by senior officials, including Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, who discussed the progress of various interventions.
Project Sangam Delivers Positive Results
Authorities reported that noticeable improvements have been recorded at 34 of the 62 priority traffic hotspots identified under the citizen-focused Project Sangam initiative. Corrective work has already been completed at these locations, while planning and implementation for the remaining 28 sites will continue in the next phase. Officials said the project aims to improve traffic efficiency through targeted engineering measures and coordinated enforcement.
Several Locations Witness Sharp Decline in Traffic Delays
Among the most improved locations, Pushta Road near Kailash Nagar registered the highest reduction in congestion, recording an 82.59 percent improvement. Khajuri Chowk followed with a 74.29 percent decline, while traffic delays at the Teen Murti roundabout were reduced by 66.01 percent. These results reflect the impact of infrastructure adjustments, better traffic regulation, and continuous monitoring undertaken by the concerned agencies.
Construction Work Continues to Affect Some Areas
Despite the overall positive trend, officials noted that congestion increased at a few locations, mainly because of ongoing road development and related activities. Naraina Flyover reported a marginal increase of 1.28 percent, while South Extension Part-I recorded a rise of 7.55 percent. Traffic delays around Max Hospital in Saket increased by 14.93 percent, and Bhavbhuti Marg experienced the sharpest increase at 349.87 percent. Authorities attributed these changes primarily to temporary construction-related disruptions.
Agencies Coordinate to Address Remaining Bottlenecks
The review also identified several locations where congestion remains a persistent challenge. Dwarka Mor, Sarai Kale Khan, Mukarba Chowk, and Dabri Gol Chakkar have been prioritised for additional infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements. Officials said regular coordination meetings and joint field inspections are being carried out with agencies such as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Public Works Department, National Highways Authority of India, Delhi Transport Corporation, New Delhi Municipal Council, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. These efforts focus on removing encroachments, improving road design, and ensuring smoother vehicle movement.
Lieutenant-Governor to Inspect Progress Personally
Appreciating the work carried out by the concerned departments, Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said he plans to personally visit the identified traffic hotspots to assess the effectiveness of the measures implemented on the ground. He also emphasised the importance of expanding technology-driven traffic management systems to maintain consistent monitoring and improve road conditions for commuters across the national capital.
