Tourism – Papikondalu River Cruise Sees Strong Summer Visitor Surge
Tourism – The boat journey through the Papikondalu hills along the Godavari River has become a standout attraction this summer, bringing in a steady flow of visitors to one of Andhra Pradesh’s most scenic regions. Known for its tranquil surroundings and expansive river views, the destination is witnessing heightened activity as holidaymakers seek nature-focused escapes.

Rising Popularity During Holiday Season
The nearly eight-hour cruise offers travellers uninterrupted views of forested hills that stretch along the riverbanks. With schools closed for summer, families and groups are increasingly choosing this route as a refreshing break from urban heat. The calm waters and untouched greenery have made the experience particularly appealing to those looking for relaxation and outdoor exploration.
Expansion of Boat Services
To accommodate the growing number of tourists, operators have significantly increased the number of boats running on this route. What was once a limited service with a single vessel has now expanded into a well-organised operation. Currently, around 16 boats, including both private operators and one managed by the state tourism corporation, conduct trips daily. At full capacity, these services can handle approximately 1,200 visitors each day, reflecting the destination’s growing demand.
Route and Travel Arrangements
The journey begins at Pushkar Ghat in Rajamahendravaram, where tourists assemble before being transported by road. From there, buses take passengers through Kovvur and onward to Polavaram in Eluru district. The route includes a passage across the upper coffer dam of the Polavaram project, adding an element of engineering interest to the trip. The final boarding point is near the Gandipochamma Temple, from where the cruise through Papikondalu officially begins.
Pricing and Onboard Facilities
Tour operators offer packaged trips that aim to provide convenience throughout the day-long excursion. Ticket prices are set at Rs 1,250 for adults, while children between the ages of five and ten are charged Rs 1,050. The package includes meals such as breakfast, lunch, and evening refreshments, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the journey without worrying about logistics.
Blend of Nature and Cultural Significance
Beyond the scenic appeal, the route also carries cultural importance. The presence of temples along the way adds a spiritual dimension to the experience, making it attractive not only to nature enthusiasts but also to those interested in regional traditions. This combination of natural landscapes and cultural landmarks has played a key role in sustaining visitor interest over time.
Continued Growth in Visitor Interest
Tourism officials and operators remain optimistic about the sustained popularity of the Papikondalu cruise. With improved organisation, better facilities, and increased capacity, the destination is expected to continue drawing visitors in the coming months. The consistent rise in tourist numbers highlights the growing appeal of eco-tourism experiences in the region.
