Tourism – NCC Cadets Explore Water Adventures at Umiam Lake Camp
Tourism – The National Cadet Corps has introduced a unique training programme in Meghalaya, bringing together cadets from Assam for an intensive learning experience centered on water-based activities.

Cadets Receive First-Hand Experience in Water Sports
A group of 100 cadets from both the Army and Air Wings of the NCC are currently participating in a ten-day Aqua Adventure Regatta at Umiam Lake. Organised by the NCC Guwahati Group under the North Eastern Region Directorate, the camp began on April 24 and will conclude on May 3.
For many participants, this marks their first interaction with activities such as boating and other aquatic exercises. The initiative has been designed to provide structured exposure to water sports while also encouraging confidence in unfamiliar environments. According to officials, the programme focuses on building essential life skills, including teamwork, discipline, and resilience, alongside physical training.
Focus on Building Confidence and Team Spirit
The defence authorities highlighted that the regatta is not just a recreational event but a carefully planned effort to prepare cadets for future challenges. Through guided sessions and supervised activities, participants are learning to navigate water safely and develop a sense of coordination with peers.
Officials stated that such initiatives aim to identify and nurture young talent while instilling a sense of adventure. The programme also emphasizes safety awareness, ensuring that cadets gain both practical knowledge and confidence in handling water-based situations.
Bar Licence Suspended Following Fatal Accident
In a separate development, authorities in Guwahati have suspended the licence of a bar-cum-restaurant after a late-night road accident resulted in the deaths of three young women. The establishment, identified as D Tipsy Gaon (EXORO), is under investigation for alleged violations of licensing conditions.
Preliminary findings suggest that the victims had visited the venue on the night of April 26 along with a male companion. The group reportedly consumed alcohol before leaving the premises around 3 am. However, the bar is permitted to serve liquor only until 12:30 am, raising concerns about compliance with regulations.
District authorities have ordered a detailed inquiry, which will be conducted by the superintendent of excise. The lone survivor of the accident, identified as Shamim Ahmed, was initially untraceable but has since been taken into custody by the police.
Investigation Aims to Establish Accountability
Officials have indicated that the probe will examine whether the establishment violated operational guidelines and whether such violations contributed to the tragic incident. Authorities are also reviewing enforcement mechanisms to ensure stricter adherence to licensing norms across similar establishments.
The incident has sparked discussions about late-night safety and regulatory oversight, with officials reiterating the importance of compliance to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Students Participate in Wildlife Conservation Workshop
Meanwhile, in Morigaon district, a group of 60 students from schools near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary attended a one-day workshop focused on wildlife conservation. The programme aimed to educate students about the ecological significance of rhinoceroses and the role communities play in protecting them.
The workshop was jointly organised by the Rhino Research Conservation Division of Aaranyak and the sanctuary authorities, with support from Zoo Berlin. Participants engaged in interactive sessions designed to foster awareness about biodiversity and environmental responsibility.
Organisers noted that the initiative sought to strengthen the connection between young learners and nature, encouraging them to take an active interest in conservation efforts. Through discussions and activities, students were introduced to practical ways of supporting wildlife protection and preserving natural habitats.
Encouraging Community Involvement in Conservation
Experts involved in the programme emphasised that local communities play a crucial role in safeguarding wildlife. By educating students at an early stage, such initiatives aim to build a generation that is more conscious of environmental challenges and solutions.
The sessions also highlighted the importance of coexistence between humans and wildlife, particularly in areas close to protected zones. Organisers expressed hope that continued outreach efforts would contribute to long-term conservation goals.
