Tourism – Chandrababu Naidu Unveils Vision for World-Class Polavaram Riverfront Destination
Tourism – The Andhra Pradesh government has outlined an ambitious roadmap to transform the Polavaram region and the Akhanda Godavari corridor into a major tourism destination, combining infrastructure, nature, culture, and adventure while creating new employment opportunities across the state.
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken another step toward developing the Polavaram irrigation project into a landmark tourism destination. On Tuesday, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed a detailed master plan that aims to convert the Polavaram region and the Akhanda Godavari riverfront into a globally competitive tourism hub. The review meeting, held at the Chief Minister’s Camp Office, was attended by Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, senior officials, and project consultants.
Comprehensive Tourism Vision for Polavaram
During the meeting, officials presented plans covering more than 1,500 acres around the Polavaram project. The proposal seeks to make use of the region’s expansive water bodies, surrounding hills, forests, and scenic landscapes to attract visitors throughout the year. The government believes the area’s natural setting offers strong potential for tourism alongside its primary role in irrigation.
Chief Minister Naidu instructed officials to prepare a long-term strategy that balances tourism development with environmental preservation while ensuring the project contributes to the state’s economic growth.
International Consultants Present Master Plan
Representatives of international consultancy firm Nippon Koei showcased conceptual designs prepared for the proposed development. The master plan includes an iconic cable bridge to be constructed below the Polavaram spillway, extensive landscaping and beautification around the spillway area, and the creation of a large island covering nearly 500 acres in the riverbed downstream of the project.
The designs also focus on developing attractive public spaces that highlight the natural beauty of the Godavari River while offering modern facilities for visitors.
Adventure, Wellness and Leisure Facilities Planned
The proposed tourism infrastructure combines outdoor adventure with leisure and hospitality. According to the plan, visitors could enjoy water sports complexes, trekking routes, rock climbing zones, and other adventure-based activities. In addition, the project envisions premium wellness centres, landscaped waterfronts, and dedicated venues suitable for destination weddings.
Officials believe this combination of recreational facilities and scenic surroundings could help position the Polavaram region as a preferred destination for domestic and international travellers.
Cultural Heritage to Be Showcased
The master plan also gives importance to preserving and promoting the cultural significance of the Godavari basin. Proposed facilities include eco-friendly accommodation, luxury resorts, amusement parks, and a modern museum dedicated to the history, heritage, and cultural traditions associated with the Godavari River.
The government expects these attractions to encourage longer visitor stays while offering educational and cultural experiences alongside recreational activities.
Expansion Along the Godavari Corridor
During the review, the Chief Minister suggested extending tourism development beyond the immediate Polavaram project area. He asked officials to identify additional tourism opportunities along the banks of the Godavari River up to the Bhadrachalam border within Andhra Pradesh.
The expanded corridor, if implemented, would connect multiple destinations and create a broader tourism network that showcases the river’s natural landscapes and cultural landmarks.
Employment and Revenue Generation in Focus
Chief Minister Naidu said the Polavaram project would continue to serve its primary objective of providing irrigation benefits to millions of acres of agricultural land. At the same time, he noted that tourism development could become an important source of revenue for the state.
He also highlighted the employment potential of the Akhanda Godavari initiative, stating that large-scale tourism infrastructure would create jobs across various sectors, including hospitality, transport, recreation, and local services. The Chief Minister directed the Tourism and Water Resources departments to finalise implementation schedules in coordination with the ongoing Polavaram project timeline.
