TerrorAttack – A Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable lost his life after militants targeted security personnel in Anantnag, prompting an extensive search operation by security agencies.
A Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable was killed in a militant attack in Anantnag town on Wednesday, marking the first assault on security force personnel in the Kashmir Valley this year. The incident occurred while the officer was assigned to security duties linked to the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, one of the region’s most significant annual pilgrimages. The attack has once again raised concerns over the security situation in the Valley despite intensified counter-terror operations.
Attack Reported at Busy Anantnag Location
According to officials, the firing took place at around 12:30 pm in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag. Head Constable Ashiq Hussain was on active deployment when unidentified militants opened fire. The sudden attack left the officer critically injured before emergency responders shifted him to Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag for treatment.
Doctors at the hospital, however, declared him dead upon arrival. Officials confirmed that Hussain succumbed to the severe injuries sustained during the incident despite immediate medical assistance.
Massive Search Operation Launched
Soon after the shooting, security forces moved quickly to secure the surrounding area. Additional personnel were deployed as roads and nearby locations were sealed to prevent the attackers from escaping. A comprehensive search operation was launched to locate those responsible for the attack.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact number of militants involved, but security agencies continue to conduct searches in and around the town. Surveillance and intelligence efforts have also been intensified as investigators gather evidence related to the incident.
Terror Group Claims Responsibility
Officials said that The Resistance Front (TRF), which is widely regarded as a proxy outfit linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement circulated on social media.
Security agencies are examining the claim as part of the ongoing investigation. Such online claims are routinely verified alongside intelligence inputs before being treated as confirmed evidence in official investigations.
First Attack on Security Personnel This Year
The killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain is being reported as the first militant attack targeting security force personnel in the Kashmir Valley during the current year. The incident comes at a time when authorities have maintained heightened security arrangements, particularly because of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the country.
Security officials have repeatedly stated that extensive measures are in place to ensure the safety of pilgrims and maintain law and order throughout the pilgrimage season.
Incident Follows Recent Counter-Terror Operation
The latest attack comes nearly two weeks after security forces eliminated Lashkar-e-Taiba militant Zakir Ganai during an anti-militancy operation in Shopian district on July 8. The operation lasted four days after intelligence agencies received information about the presence of two LeT militants, including Ganai, in the area.
Officials continue to monitor the security environment across south Kashmir as counter-terror operations remain active. Investigations into Wednesday’s attack are ongoing, while security agencies have reiterated their commitment to tracing those responsible and maintaining vigilance across the region.
