Smart Grid – Delhi Launches Advanced Power Substation and Expands Rooftop Solar Push
Smart Grid – The Delhi government has introduced the capital’s first 2×1,000 kVA smart pad-mounted power substation at Amar Mohalla in Gandhi Nagar while also rolling out the “Solarize East” campaign to encourage wider participation in rooftop solar adoption. The twin initiatives are designed to strengthen the city’s electricity infrastructure and promote renewable energy through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and the Delhi Solar Policy. Officials said the move is expected to improve power reliability and support the growing demand for clean energy across East Delhi.
New Smart Power Infrastructure Introduced
The projects were formally inaugurated at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Surajmal Vihar by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra along with Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood. The newly commissioned smart pad-mounted substation represents a significant upgrade in Delhi’s power distribution network and is expected to enhance operational efficiency while ensuring a more dependable electricity supply for consumers in the surrounding areas.
According to officials, modern power infrastructure will play a key role in meeting increasing electricity consumption while supporting future urban development. The substation has been introduced as part of broader efforts to modernise the capital’s energy network through advanced technology.
Solarize East Campaign Focuses on Renewable Energy
Alongside the infrastructure project, the government launched the “Solarize East” initiative to encourage residents to install rooftop solar systems. The campaign supports the objectives of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana as well as the Delhi Solar Policy by increasing awareness about the benefits of solar power and encouraging greater community participation.
Officials believe expanding rooftop solar installations can reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while helping households lower electricity expenses over time. The campaign also aims to contribute to Delhi’s long-term sustainability goals by increasing the share of renewable energy in the city’s overall power mix.
Leaders Highlight Future Power Planning
Addressing the gathering, Harsh Malhotra praised the efforts of the Delhi Power Department for successfully managing the city’s record electricity demand during the summer season. He stated that the government is actively preparing for the capital’s future energy requirements through investments in modern infrastructure and cleaner sources of power.
Malhotra also described the newly launched initiatives by BSES as meaningful steps towards building a stronger electricity network capable of supporting Delhi’s continued growth. He noted that long-term planning remains essential as demand for reliable power continues to increase.
Government Stresses Sustainable Development
Power Minister Ashish Sood said effective governance involves not only addressing current challenges but also preparing the city for future opportunities. He emphasised that upgrading substations and expanding rooftop solar installations are important components of Delhi’s strategy to build a stronger, greener and more self-reliant energy system.
Sood added that investments in modern electricity infrastructure and renewable energy projects are expected to improve service quality while supporting environmental sustainability. The government believes these initiatives will help create a resilient power network capable of meeting rising demand in the years ahead while encouraging greater public participation in clean energy adoption.
