Sanitation – The Delhi government is preparing to roll out an ambitious plan to build nearly 1,000 modern public toilets across the national capital over the coming year. The initiative is aimed at improving sanitation standards, particularly in crowded markets and densely populated neighborhoods where existing facilities are either inadequate or poorly maintained.
Focus on High-Traffic and Congested Zones
According to officials familiar with the proposal, the new facilities will be strategically located in areas that witness heavy public movement. Markets such as Chandni Chowk and Sarojini Nagar, along with several other busy parts of the city, have been identified as priority zones. These locations often face pressure on sanitation infrastructure due to high daily footfall, making the need for clean and accessible public toilets more urgent.
The project aims not only to expand the number of toilets but also to upgrade their design and usability. Authorities intend to replace outdated, unhygienic structures with well-planned units that are more functional and user-friendly.
Modern Design with Added Amenities
One of the standout features of the proposed model is the inclusion of small kiosks within the toilet premises. These kiosks will offer essential items, adding a layer of convenience for users. More importantly, the integration of kiosks is expected to improve maintenance standards.
Officials explained that the caretaker of each facility will also manage the kiosk. This dual responsibility is intended to ensure that the caretaker remains present on-site for longer durations, reducing the chances of neglect. Continuous presence is expected to result in better monitoring, quicker cleaning cycles, and overall improved upkeep of the facilities.
Structured Implementation Strategy
The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) will oversee the execution of the project. A structured framework is being put in place to ensure not just the construction of these units, but also their long-term maintenance.
Authorities are focusing on sustainability and operational efficiency. By combining infrastructure development with a built-in system for supervision, the government hopes to avoid common issues such as vandalism, poor hygiene, and lack of accountability that have affected public toilets in the past.

For the current financial year, the government has allocated Rs 300 crore for infrastructure-related initiatives in the city. This budget will support the construction of the new public toilets along with several other urban improvement and beautification projects.
