Rainfall Prayer – The Telangana government has announced that a traditional Varuna Yagam will be organised on August 10 with prayers seeking widespread rainfall, stronger river flows, improved reservoir storage, and agricultural prosperity across the state.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has decided to organise the religious ritual as part of efforts to pray for favourable weather conditions and adequate rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season. The ceremony will be held at the Vijaya Vihar premises situated near the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam on the Krishna River after priests and Vedic scholars from the Yadagirigutta Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Devasthanam identified August 10 as an auspicious date for the event.
Ritual Planned Under Endowments Department
According to Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, the Varuna Yagam is intended to invoke abundant rainfall, ensure the well-being of people in Telangana as well as the country, and support a successful agricultural season. The prayers will also focus on securing healthy inflows into the Krishna and Godavari rivers, filling major reservoirs including Nagarjuna Sagar, replenishing lakes and tanks across the state, and protecting Telangana from the adverse effects associated with El Niño weather conditions.
The programme will be organised under the supervision of the Endowments Department. Priests and Vedic scholars from the Yadagirigutta temple will lead the rituals, maintaining traditional religious practices throughout the ceremony.
Large-Scale Religious Ceremony
The event is expected to involve 108 Rithwiks, along with 11 Homa Kundas that will be used for the sacred fire rituals. Teams of priests and Vedic scholars will perform the ceremonies while offering special prayers for sufficient rainfall, improved river water levels, thriving agriculture, and the welfare of livestock across Telangana.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is also scheduled to participate in the Poornahuti, the concluding offering of the ritual, which has been planned for 3:24 p.m. on August 10.
Focus on Farmers and Water Resources
The state government has said the ceremony reflects its intention to seek nature’s blessings for improved rainfall and sustainable water availability. Officials believe healthy water levels in rivers and reservoirs are essential for irrigation, drinking water supplies, and overall rural development.
Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said the prayers are aimed at supporting the farming community by encouraging a productive crop season, ensuring better water storage in reservoirs, and contributing to the state’s long-term prosperity. The ritual is also expected to symbolise collective hopes for balanced weather conditions during the remaining monsoon period.
Rainfall Situation Improves Across Telangana
The announcement comes as Telangana’s rainfall position has shown considerable improvement over recent weeks. After experiencing a significant shortfall earlier in the southwest monsoon season, steady rainfall during the latter half of July helped narrow the cumulative deficit substantially.
Official figures from the Telangana Development Planning Society indicate that the state received 224.3 mm of rainfall in July compared with the normal average of 227.6 mm, leaving the month’s deficit at only one per cent.
The overall southwest monsoon deficit has also reduced to five per cent. Between June 1 and July 31, Telangana recorded 339.6 mm of rainfall against the seasonal normal of 357.9 mm. Earlier in the season, the rainfall deficit had reached 61 per cent by July 16 before improved weather conditions helped reverse the trend.
As the monsoon continues, the state government remains hopeful that additional rainfall will further improve reservoir levels, strengthen river flows, and support agricultural activities across Telangana.
