Politics – The political atmosphere in West Bengal intensified on Monday after Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee accused alleged BJP supporters of setting several shops on fire in East Midnapore district, raising fresh concerns over law and order in the state following the recent Assembly election results.
Allegations Surface Over Fire Incident in Khejuri
Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), claimed that nearly 10 shops were destroyed in a fire in the Khejuri region of East Midnapore. According to his statement shared on social media platform X, the incident reportedly occurred in the Jonka Gram Panchayat area of West Bhangan Mari late on Sunday night.
Banerjee alleged that individuals linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were responsible for the incident. He further claimed that the fire broke out in the presence of police personnel and questioned why immediate action was not taken to prevent the damage.
The TMC leader said that several local traders lost their means of livelihood after the shops were reduced to ashes. He accused the BJP of encouraging a climate of fear and political intimidation in the state after assuming power.
Sharp Political Exchange Between TMC and BJP
In his remarks, Banerjee launched a strong attack on the BJP leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He alleged that violence and division were becoming political tools under the new administration in West Bengal.
He also questioned the role of central security forces, asking whether they were being deployed selectively based on political interests. Banerjee stated that ordinary citizens were being affected by growing political tensions and warned that such incidents could deepen unrest across several districts.
The BJP had not immediately issued a detailed response to the allegations at the time of reporting. However, political observers noted that tensions between the BJP and TMC have remained high since the declaration of the 2026 Assembly election results.
Concerns Over Law and Order Situation
The latest allegations come amid a broader debate over security and governance in the state. Banerjee accused the administration of failing to maintain public confidence during a sensitive political transition period.
He said incidents involving violence and intimidation send a troubling message to local communities and small business owners. According to him, the situation requires urgent attention to ensure that normalcy is restored and that affected families receive support.
The alleged incident in East Midnapore has once again placed the spotlight on political clashes in Bengal, where rival parties have often accused each other of targeting supporters and workers during periods of heightened political activity.
BJP Government Begins Administrative Restructuring
Meanwhile, the newly formed BJP government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has already started implementing major administrative changes shortly after taking office.
On Sunday, the state administration announced the transfer of seven senior West Bengal Civil Service officers to the Chief Minister’s Office. The officers have reportedly been appointed as Senior Deputy Secretaries to assist in executing the government’s development and governance plans linked to the “Sonar Bangla” vision.
The reshuffle is being viewed as one of the first major bureaucratic steps taken by the new government after the BJP secured a decisive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Historic Election Outcome Changes Bengal Politics
The recent Assembly election marked a major political shift in West Bengal. The BJP won 206 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state. The Trinamool Congress secured 80 seats in the election.
Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, and several party supporters attended the oath-taking ceremony.
Political analysts believe the coming weeks will be crucial as the new administration faces growing scrutiny over governance, public safety, and its handling of political tensions across the state.
