Politics – Suvendu Adhikari Chooses Bhabanipur Seat, Leaves Nandigram Representation
Politics – Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has decided to continue as the MLA from Bhabanipur while vacating the Nandigram Assembly seat after securing victories in both constituencies during the recently concluded elections.

Adhikari formally took oath as a member of the West Bengal Assembly from Bhabanipur on Wednesday. The constituency gained national attention after he defeated Trinamool Congress chief and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 15,105 votes. At the same time, he also retained his hold over Nandigram by defeating TMC candidate Pabitra Kar with a lead of 9,665 votes.
Decision to Retain Bhabanipur Seat
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Adhikari confirmed that he would continue representing Bhabanipur and step down from Nandigram. The move will pave the way for a by-election in Nandigram, where voters will elect a new MLA in the coming months.
Despite leaving the constituency officially, Adhikari assured residents of Nandigram that he would remain actively connected to the region and continue to address local concerns. He stated that development commitments made during the election campaign would still be fulfilled and that the area would not be neglected.
The BJP leader also emphasized that his engagement with Nandigram would continue over the next five years, even without holding the Assembly seat directly.
Reference to Earlier Political Experience
During the interaction, Adhikari recalled his earlier political role in Nandigram when he was associated with the Trinamool Congress. He referred to the period between 2009 and 2016, when Phiroja Bibi represented the constituency as a TMC MLA.
Adhikari noted that although he was not officially the elected representative at that time, he remained deeply involved in local political and development activities. He highlighted that he had extended full support to Phiroja Bibi, whose family had become widely known after the 2008 Nandigram police firing incident.
According to Adhikari, he intends to maintain a similar level of involvement in Nandigram even after vacating the seat. His comments appeared aimed at reassuring supporters and local residents about his continued presence in the area’s political landscape.
Remarks on Fuel Conservation Measures
Apart from discussing Assembly matters, Adhikari also responded to questions regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for austerity and fuel conservation amid tensions in West Asia and the resulting pressure on global energy supplies.
Backing the Prime Minister’s message, Adhikari said steps were already being taken to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption linked to official movement. He revealed that instructions had been issued to cut down the number of vehicles accompanying his convoy.
The BJP leader described Prime Minister Modi as a guiding figure and said public representatives should follow initiatives aimed at national interest and resource conservation. He compared the latest move with earlier nationwide campaigns such as Swachh Bharat, which he described as an important public initiative.
Instructions on Official Convoys
Adhikari further stated that he had asked the state’s Director General of Police to ensure that only essential security and escort vehicles remain attached to the Chief Minister’s convoy. Any vehicles considered unnecessary, he said, should be removed immediately.
His remarks come at a time when discussions over government spending and fuel usage have intensified due to rising geopolitical tensions and increasing energy costs. Political observers believe the announcement may also carry symbolic significance, reflecting attempts by political leaders to project administrative restraint and efficiency.
The decision to retain Bhabanipur while leaving Nandigram is expected to shape political discussions in West Bengal in the coming weeks, particularly as parties prepare for the upcoming by-election in the politically significant Nandigram constituency.
