Politics – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann travelled to Delhi on Tuesday morning along with a large group of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators, aiming to raise concerns over the recent defection of several party MPs. The delegation sought to meet President Droupadi Murmu to press for action regarding the lawmakers who switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Unified Show of Strength by AAP Leadership
The visit was marked by a coordinated display of unity, with nearly all AAP MLAs from Punjab joining the Chief Minister. Party leaders described the move as an effort to counter speculation about internal divisions following the high-profile defections. The convoy, accompanied by tight security arrangements, reflected both logistical planning and political messaging.
Several MLAs were seen holding placards criticising the MPs who left the party, underscoring dissatisfaction within the ranks. While Mann proceeded inside Rashtrapati Bhavan for the scheduled meeting, the legislators remained outside, signalling collective support for the party leadership.
Background of the Defection Episode
The political situation intensified after seven out of ten AAP members in the Rajya Sabha joined the BJP in late April. The lawmakers cited dissatisfaction with the party’s direction, claiming it had moved away from its founding principles. Most of these MPs represented Punjab, making the development particularly significant for the state’s political landscape.
The merger was later formally acknowledged by the Rajya Sabha Chairman, reducing AAP’s presence in the Upper House to just three members. This shift has not only affected the party’s parliamentary strength but also raised questions about internal cohesion.
Mann’s Stand on Party Unity
Chief Minister Mann described the defecting MPs as leaders driven by personal interests rather than public service. He maintained that the party’s MLAs remain firmly aligned with AAP’s leadership and vision.
Speaking before the meeting, Mann emphasised that he alone had been granted time with the President, adding that he would present the concerns of all party legislators. He reiterated that safeguarding the mandate given by the people of Punjab was a key responsibility.
Planned Political Engagement in Delhi
After the meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the group was expected to gather at Kapurthala House, where party leaders had arranged a lunch. According to sources, this gathering was intended to reinforce unity and strengthen coordination among the MLAs at a time of political uncertainty.
State minister Lal Chand Kataruchak confirmed that the delegation’s main objective was to demand action regarding the MPs who switched parties. The leadership believes that the issue has implications for democratic accountability and voter trust.
Opposition and BJP React to Developments
The developments have also drawn sharp reactions from opposition leaders. Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa questioned the timing of the meetings, pointing out that some of the defected MPs were also scheduled to meet the President earlier the same day. He suggested that the sequence of events raised concerns about political coordination behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar criticised the Chief Minister, urging him to uphold the dignity of constitutional institutions. In earlier remarks, he had also hinted at further political shifts, suggesting that the situation could evolve in unexpected ways.

This marks the third instance since late April where AAP has attempted to demonstrate unity through collective actions involving its legislators. Earlier meetings and a special assembly session were also convened to reinforce the party’s position.
With 94 MLAs in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, AAP continues to hold a strong majority. However, the recent developments highlight the challenges the party faces in maintaining cohesion at the national level.
