PolavaramProject – A group of trainee Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from the 2025 batch visited the Polavaram Irrigation Project on Tuesday as part of an educational field tour designed to provide practical exposure to major infrastructure initiatives in Andhra Pradesh. The visit was conducted under the AP Darshan Programme, which introduces probationary officers to important development projects across the state.
Field Visit to Major Water Projects
The trainee officers, including CH Sravan Kumar Reddy, Hari Om Pandia, Kshitij Aditya Sharma, Namrat Agarwal, Pawan Teja AR, Priya, Suyash Kumar, and Venkatesh Banna, toured several significant water infrastructure facilities. Their itinerary covered the Polavaram Irrigation Project, the Polavaram Hydroelectric Project, and the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme.
The visit was aimed at helping the officers understand the planning, implementation, and long-term benefits of large-scale irrigation and water management systems that play a crucial role in regional development.
Officials Explain Project Features and Objectives
Senior engineers and project representatives briefed the visiting officers on various aspects of the projects. Among those present were Polavaram Project Superintending Engineer Reddy Ramachandra Rao, Executive Engineer Balakrishna, Deputy Executive Engineer Srinivas, MEIL Project General Manager A. Gangadhar, and Deputy General Manager Murali Pammi.
The officials provided detailed presentations covering the objectives, engineering design, construction progress, and operational goals of the projects. They also discussed the technical difficulties encountered during execution and the measures adopted to address those challenges.
Importance of the Polavaram Project
During the interaction, project authorities highlighted the strategic importance of the Polavaram Project in supporting multiple sectors. Once fully operational, the project is expected to strengthen irrigation facilities across large agricultural areas, improve drinking water availability, generate hydroelectric power, and assist in flood control management.
Officials noted that the project has been designed as a multipurpose initiative intended to contribute to both economic growth and water security in the region.
Officers Review Ongoing Construction Activities
Following the briefing sessions, the trainee IAS officers inspected various sections of the ongoing construction works. They observed project operations on-site and engaged in discussions with engineers and administrative personnel involved in the execution process.
The officers sought information on technical planning, project management practices, environmental considerations, and administrative coordination required for handling infrastructure projects of such scale and complexity.
The field inspection provided an opportunity for the trainees to gain firsthand knowledge of how major public works are monitored and implemented, helping bridge the gap between academic training and real-world governance responsibilities.
Pattiseema Scheme’s Contribution Recognised
The visiting officers also reviewed the functioning and significance of the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme. During the discussions, they acknowledged the scheme’s role in enhancing water resource utilization and supporting irrigation requirements in different parts of the state.
Officials explained how the scheme has contributed to improving water distribution and strengthening agricultural support systems, making it an important component of Andhra Pradesh’s broader water management strategy.
The visit concluded with interactive discussions between the trainee officers and project teams, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with managing large public infrastructure projects.
