Pilgrimage – Transport Checks Intensified Along Kedarnath Route During Yatra Season

Pilgrimage –  The Uttarakhand Transport Department has stepped up inspection activities along the Kedarnath pilgrimage route as authorities work to ensure safe and regulated travel during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra. Officials are closely monitoring vehicles for valid permits, passenger limits, and mandatory documentation to maintain smooth movement of pilgrims visiting the revered Himalayan shrines.

Enforcement Drive Continues Across Rudraprayag

According to Assistant Regional Transport Officer Dharmendra Singh Bisht, transport authorities have been carrying out extensive verification campaigns since April under the guidance of district administration officials. The inspections are aimed at ensuring that commercial and passenger vehicles operating on the pilgrimage route comply with transport regulations and safety norms.

Bisht said that enforcement teams have remained active throughout the yatra period, conducting regular checks at multiple locations across Rudraprayag district. The department has been focusing on preventing violations that could affect passenger safety or disrupt pilgrimage operations.

Revenue Generated Through Regulatory Action

Providing details of the ongoing campaign, the ARTO stated that from April until now, authorities have issued 539 challans, resulting in revenue collection of approximately Rs 30.5 lakh. In addition, enforcement actions taken during May alone led to the issuance of 1,140 challans and generated nearly Rs 12.5 lakh in revenue.

Officials indicated that these inspection drives will continue throughout the pilgrimage season. The department has also urged pilgrims to remain cautious while travelling through mountainous terrain, especially considering changing weather conditions in the region. Visitors have been advised to travel responsibly and maintain patience during their journey.

Security Agencies Conduct Preparedness Exercise

In a separate development, security forces carried out a mock emergency response exercise at the Char Dham Yatra Transit Camp in Rishikesh. The drill was organised to evaluate preparedness levels and strengthen security arrangements for the large number of pilgrims currently travelling across Uttarakhand.

The exercise involved coordinated participation from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Services personnel, and local police units. Authorities simulated a hostage rescue and counter-terror operation to test response mechanisms and inter-agency coordination.

Hostage Rescue Scenario Practised

Circle Officer Tushar Bora said the mock operation was designed to keep security personnel prepared for potential emergency situations. During the exercise, teams successfully rescued three hostages while neutralising a simulated threat. A mock injured suspect was also shifted to a hospital as part of the training scenario.

Officials noted that such exercises help agencies identify operational improvements while reassuring pilgrims that robust security measures remain in place throughout the pilgrimage season.

Char Dham Shrines Opened Earlier This Year

The annual Char Dham Yatra formally began on April 22, following traditional religious ceremonies associated with the opening of the sacred shrines. This year, all four temples—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—were opened during April 2026, marking the start of one of India’s most significant spiritual journeys.

The pilgrimage to Kedarnath Temple commenced with the ceremonial departure of the Panchmukhi palanquin of Lord Kedarnath from the Omkareshwar Temple, its winter abode. Thousands of devotees have since been travelling to the Himalayan shrines, with state authorities focusing on transportation management, safety arrangements, and security preparedness to facilitate a smooth pilgrimage experience.
