Parliament – The upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament is expected to feature significant political developments, administrative discussions, and policy-related debates as both the government and Opposition prepare for an eventful sitting.
Rajya Sabha Set for Political Realignment
The Monsoon Session is likely to bring visible changes inside the Rajya Sabha, where recent political shifts could influence both parliamentary discussions and seating arrangements. Three former members of the Trinamool Congress—Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Prakash Chik Baraik—are expected to take their seats as Bharatiya Janata Party representatives after resigning from their earlier positions and joining the BJP.
Having received Rajya Sabha nominations soon after entering the party, the three leaders are now expected to support the government from the Treasury benches instead of participating from the Opposition side. BJP leaders believe their induction will strengthen the National Democratic Alliance’s position in the Upper House and provide additional support during legislative debates.
Rahul Gandhi’s Absence Draws Attention
Ahead of the parliamentary session beginning on July 20, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi remains away on an overseas visit, prompting discussion within political circles. Posters questioning his absence have appeared in parts of Delhi, while several Congress leaders have reportedly said they do not have details of his travel schedule.
Party insiders, however, expect Gandhi to return shortly before Parliament meets. His absence comes at a time when the Congress is dealing with internal organisational challenges in states such as Punjab and Goa. The delay has also affected the momentum of the party’s Chhatron Ki Goonj campaign. Within the INDIA alliance, some leaders privately acknowledge that the lack of his presence has made coordination among Opposition parties more difficult in the run-up to the session.
Speculation Surrounds Four Union Ministers
Political discussions have also intensified over the future of four Union ministers who have faced repeated public scrutiny in recent months. Although there has been no official indication of any Cabinet changes, speculation continues that some of them could eventually be assigned organisational responsibilities within the BJP instead of continuing in ministerial positions.
Party observers note that the BJP has often preferred to deal with such situations through Cabinet reshuffles rather than immediate resignations. If the ministers continue in their current roles, Opposition parties are expected to keep raising issues linked to previous controversies during the Monsoon Session.
Cultural Diplomacy Through Buddhist Relics
The Union government is expanding its efforts to promote India’s cultural heritage by sending sacred relics associated with Lord Buddha to international exhibitions and religious events. Officials believe these exhibitions help communicate the values of peace, compassion, and non-violence while strengthening India’s cultural engagement with the global community.
The initiative has also generated interest among several Indian states and Union Territories. Earlier this year, a public exhibition of the Holy Relics of Tathagata was organised in Ladakh. Arunachal Pradesh, which is home to the renowned Tawang Monastery, has now requested the Centre to organise a similar exhibition for visitors and devotees in the state.
PMO Pushes for Simpler Government Websites
The Prime Minister’s Office has reportedly asked ministries and government departments to modernise their official websites, pointing out that many portals have not been updated for years and remain difficult to navigate. Officials believe the current digital platforms often create unnecessary confusion for citizens seeking essential government information.
The proposed improvements are expected to focus on user-friendly layouts, regularly updated content, and easier access to public services. According to officials, information related to schemes such as the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme or procedures for establishing manufacturing units should be available through a more straightforward and citizen-friendly online experience rather than requiring users to search through multiple layers of government portals.
