Parliament – Opposition Questions Government Over Debate on Student Protest Action
Parliament –The political confrontation over the police response to student demonstrations intensified in Parliament, with Opposition leaders alleging that the government avoided a detailed discussion on the issue and did not provide direct answers to questions raised over the handling of the protests.
SP MP Alleges Debate Was Prevented
Samajwadi Party MP Pushpendra Saroj accused the government of limiting parliamentary debate on matters related to student safety and the police action during recent demonstrations. Speaking to ANI, he claimed that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was interrupted multiple times while attempting to raise concerns linked to the incident.
According to Saroj, Gandhi intended to seek clarification on who authorized the police action and who was responsible for the use of force against students. He argued that these were important questions that deserved a detailed discussion inside the House rather than repeated interruptions during the proceedings.
Demand for Response From Top Leadership
Saroj also criticized the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the discussion. He said the Opposition expected responses directly from the country’s top leadership but instead received a reply from another minister.
The SP MP further alleged that Parliament was adjourned earlier than necessary, despite sufficient time being available for an extended debate. He maintained that the government had the opportunity to continue discussions until later in the day but chose not to do so, reflecting what he described as an unwillingness to engage with the Opposition on the matter.
Congress Supports Rahul Gandhi’s Position
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat echoed Rahul Gandhi’s position, stating that the Leader of the Opposition was fulfilling his responsibility by raising issues affecting students. Bhagat said Gandhi sought accountability regarding the police action and wanted clarity over who had authorized the measures taken during the protest.
He added that questions directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah were intended to determine whether the decision had been made under his authority. Bhagat argued that if the Home Minister had no knowledge of the incident, it would raise concerns about administrative oversight, while if he had approved the action, he should explain the decision before Parliament.
Rahul Gandhi Raises Questions After Lok Sabha Adjournment
Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi addressed reporters after the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned. Referring to the events linked to the July 20 student protest at Jantar Mantar, he said the Union Home Minister should clarify his role regarding the police action.
Gandhi stated that, in his view, there were only two possible explanations. He said either the Home Minister had authorized the action taken against the protesters or he was unaware of the developments while they occurred. According to Gandhi, both possibilities required an explanation in Parliament.
The Congress leader maintained that if the Home Minister had issued the order, responsibility should be accepted. Alternatively, if such action took place without his knowledge, he argued that it would indicate a serious failure of oversight within the ministry.
Issue Continues to Fuel Political Debate
The exchange has added to the ongoing confrontation between the ruling government and Opposition parties during the current Parliament session. While Opposition leaders continue to demand a detailed debate and greater accountability over the police response to student protesters, the issue is expected to remain a significant point of discussion as Parliament continues its proceedings.
