Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday voiced strong objections to the recent decision to replace the traditional blue jersey of the Indian hockey team with a saffron kit. Speaking to reporters during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, she said the move reflected broader attempts to reshape India’s historical narrative and cultural identity.

Her remarks came days after Hockey India introduced the new playing kits for the senior men’s and women’s teams on July 27. The jerseys are expected to be worn during the upcoming FIH Men’s and Women’s Hockey World Cups.

Links Decision to National Values

Addressing the media, Priyanka Gandhi said that changing uniforms or revising historical narratives through education policies could not alter the country’s core character. According to her, India’s foundation is built on the principles of truth, non-violence and mutual respect, values that remain deeply rooted regardless of political developments.

She also referred to recent public discussions involving young people, saying their opinions reflected a growing awareness of issues concerning the nation’s identity. She maintained that public sentiment should not be ignored while decisions affecting national symbols are being debated.

Freedom Movement at the Centre of Her Remarks

The Wayanad MP further stated that India’s struggle for independence was guided by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and truth. She claimed that the Congress party played a leading role in that movement and argued that these historical realities continue to define the country’s democratic values.

Priyanka Gandhi also asserted that no organisation or political ideology could erase the ideals of unity, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence that she described as central to India’s national character. She said efforts aimed at creating social divisions would not change those enduring principles.

Debate Extends Beyond Politics

The change in the Indian hockey jersey has also attracted attention from members of the sporting community. Former India hockey captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha publicly questioned the decision, saying the blue jersey has long represented the identity of the national team.

In a post shared on X, Rasquinha acknowledged Hockey India’s contributions to the sport but expressed disappointment over the colour change. He noted that generations of Indian players proudly represented the country in blue and said supporters have traditionally associated the team with that colour. He also questioned the reasoning behind introducing an orange jersey.
