Delhi Police – Verification Drive Intensifies as 216 Suspects Face Scrutiny Over Jantar Mantar Violence
Delhi Police – Delhi Police has expanded its investigation into the violence linked to the student protests at Jantar Mantar, with a special focus on the Parliament march held on July 20. As part of the ongoing inquiry, authorities have circulated dossiers of 216 suspected individuals to police units across all districts of the national capital. The verification process is intended to establish the identity of each person, confirm their presence during the incidents, and determine whether they played any role in the unrest.
Verification Assigned Across Delhi Districts
Police officials have distributed the dossiers among district units based on the residential details and available information about the suspects. The West district has received the largest share, with 26 individuals assigned for verification. It is followed by the North-East district with 23 dossiers, South with 22, and Central with 21.
Other districts have also been assigned verification responsibilities. South-West has been asked to verify 18 individuals, South-East 17, East 15, and New Delhi district 14. Shahdara has received 12 dossiers, while Outer North has been assigned 11. North and Rohini districts have nine cases each, North-West has eight, the Outer district has six, and Dwarka has been tasked with verifying five suspects. Together, these allocations account for all 216 individuals under examination.
Multiple Sources of Evidence Used
According to sources familiar with the investigation, police identified the suspects after examining a wide range of evidence collected during and after the protests. Investigators have relied on CCTV footage, videos captured at the protest site, publicly available social media posts, mobile phone location records, and other technical and digital evidence to trace the movements and identities of those believed to have been present during the violence.
Officials said the use of multiple evidence sources is intended to improve the accuracy of the investigation and ensure that conclusions are based on corroborated information rather than a single piece of evidence.
Field Verification Underway
The district-level verification exercise is considered an important stage of the investigation. Police teams are working to confirm personal details, addresses, and other background information related to each suspect. Officials believe that this step will help eliminate discrepancies, verify identities, and strengthen the overall investigation before any further legal action is considered.
Investigators have indicated that every lead is being examined carefully to avoid gaps in the probe. The verification process is also expected to assist authorities in determining the specific involvement, if any, of each individual named in the dossiers.
Technology Supporting the Investigation
Delhi Police are also making extensive use of technology as part of the inquiry. Officials are analysing CCTV recordings equipped with facial recognition capabilities alongside videos shared on social media platforms. These digital resources are being compared with other technical evidence to establish whether the identified individuals were present at Jantar Mantar during the protests and to reconstruct the sequence of events.
