Authorities said rescue workers have been operating continuously since the incident, hoping to reach those still missing despite difficult conditions deep below the surface.

Rescue Teams Continue Search for Missing Workers
According to officials from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), 41 miners were working inside the coal mine when the explosion took place on Thursday. Recovery teams have so far brought out the bodies of 34 workers, while efforts remain focused on locating the remaining miners. Personnel from the mines department, district administration and emergency rescue services are jointly carrying out the operation, which has been slowed by unstable debris and hazardous conditions inside the collapsed sections of the mine.
Methane Gas Believed to Have Triggered the Blast
Chief Inspector of Mines Muhammad Atif said preliminary findings indicate that methane gas accumulated at a depth of nearly 4,000 feet before igniting. The explosion reportedly sparked a fire and released dangerous gases throughout the underground tunnels, making rescue operations even more challenging. Officials noted that methane remains one of the leading causes of mining accidents in Balochistan, where coal extraction often takes place under demanding geological conditions.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident once recovery work is completed. Authorities have not yet released details on whether any safety violations may have contributed to the disaster.
Mining Accidents Remain a Recurring Challenge
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the risks faced by coal miners in Pakistan, particularly in regions where underground mining is common. Balochistan has witnessed several similar incidents over the years, many linked to methane gas explosions or tunnel collapses.
Mining experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of proper ventilation systems, regular gas monitoring and strict compliance with workplace safety standards to reduce the likelihood of such accidents. The outcome of the official investigation is expected to determine whether additional measures are required to improve safety practices across the sector.
Earlier Incidents Raised Similar Safety Concerns
Concerns over mine safety had already intensified earlier this year following separate accidents in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In May, two workers lost their lives in separate coal mine incidents in Shangla district.
In one case, two miners became trapped after debris collapsed inside the Akhorwal coal mine during operations. Rescue teams, fellow workers and local residents spent nearly two and a half hours clearing the site before recovering the victims. In another incident reported from the Chaparmashti area, a miner died while carrying out routine work underground.
These accidents renewed calls from labour organisations and community representatives for stronger enforcement of occupational safety regulations. Worker groups have urged the government and mining authorities to strengthen inspections, improve emergency preparedness and ensure that mine operators adopt internationally recognised safety practices.
As rescue efforts continue in Balochistan, attention remains focused on the fate of the missing miners and on the broader issue of protecting workers employed in one of the country’s most hazardous industries.
