DisasterRelief – Assam’s former Armed Forces personnel have stepped forward to support flood relief and rehabilitation by contributing ₹25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, reinforcing their long-standing commitment to serving society beyond military duty.
Veterans Extend Financial Assistance for Flood Relief
The ex-servicemen community in Assam has contributed ₹25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to assist ongoing relief and rehabilitation work for people affected by severe flooding across the state. The contribution reflects the veterans’ continued dedication to public service, demonstrating that their commitment to the nation extends well beyond their years in uniform.
The donation cheque was formally handed over to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a meeting with senior representatives of the state’s veterans’ fraternity.
Senior Retired Officers Represent Veterans’ Community
The cheque was presented by Brigadier Polash Chowdhury, SM (Retd), Director of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam. He was accompanied by Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), and Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd), recipient of the Asom Baibhav award.
Their presence highlighted the collective support of Assam’s retired defence personnel for humanitarian initiatives aimed at helping communities recover from the impact of widespread floods.
Veterans Continue Tradition of Public Service
Speaking during the programme, Brigadier Polash Chowdhury said the contribution represented the enduring responsibility felt by retired servicemen towards the people of Assam. He noted that the veterans wanted to stand alongside citizens during difficult times and expressed confidence that the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund would ensure assistance reaches families facing the greatest hardship.
He also pointed out that many ex-servicemen from different parts of Assam have voluntarily joined relief operations in coordination with the civil administration. Their participation includes supporting rescue efforts, assisting affected residents, and contributing to rehabilitation activities in flood-hit districts.
Chief Minister Appreciates the Contribution
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the veterans for their generous financial assistance and praised their continued dedication to public welfare. He said the contribution reflected values of patriotism, compassion, and selfless service that remain strong even after retirement from the Armed Forces.
The Chief Minister also expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire more individuals and organisations to extend support for humanitarian causes, especially during natural disasters that require collective community participation.
