Pakistan International Airlines – PIA Balloon Found in Rajouri, Police Begin Inquiry
Pakistan International Airlines –Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have launched an investigation after a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)-marked balloon was recovered from a village in Rajouri district, adding to a series of similar incidents reported in border areas over recent months.
Police in Rajouri district on Thursday confirmed that a balloon carrying the name and logo of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was found in Azmatabad village, located in the Thanamandi area. According to officials, the balloon was white and red in color and had the letters “PIA” printed on its surface. Residents who noticed the object informed local authorities and handed it over to the police for examination.
Police Launch Investigation Into Recovered Balloon
Officials said the balloon has been taken into police custody and is being examined as part of a routine investigation. Authorities are working to determine whether the object was simply carried across the border by changing wind patterns or if it has any relevance beyond being a drifting balloon. While no immediate security concern has been established, police said every such recovery is treated with caution before conclusions are drawn.
Security agencies routinely inspect items found near the border because of the region’s sensitive security environment. Even objects that appear harmless are subjected to verification to eliminate the possibility of any hidden purpose or link to suspicious activity.
Similar Recoveries Reported Earlier This Year
The latest recovery is one of several comparable incidents recorded across Jammu and Kashmir in 2026. In April, security personnel recovered a Pakistani balloon in the Arnia sector of Jammu district. Earlier, in March, an aeroplane-shaped balloon bearing the letters “PIA” along with Urdu text landed in Sarhoti village of Rajouri district.
Another incident in February drew attention when two balloons discovered in the Akhnoor sector reportedly carried a Pakistani Rs 5,000 currency note, a US dollar note, and a Pakistani mobile phone number. During the same month, security personnel in the R.S. Pura sector recovered a green-and-white aeroplane-shaped balloon marked “PIA” alongside a yellow heart-shaped balloon.
In January, local residents in the Akhnoor sector found another promotional toy balloon designed like an aircraft with Pakistan International Airlines branding in both English and Urdu near an open field close to the Line of Control (LoC).
Authorities Maintain Vigil Along Border Areas
Security officials have noted that many of the balloons recovered over the years are commercial promotional or decorative items that are believed to have drifted across the border because of changing wind conditions. However, authorities emphasize that each recovery must be investigated thoroughly due to ongoing security concerns in border districts.
The region has witnessed repeated attempts by cross-border elements to use drones for illegal activities, including the transportation of narcotics, ammunition, and other prohibited materials. Because of this background, even seemingly ordinary airborne objects receive careful attention from law enforcement and security agencies.
Standard Security Protocols Activated
Officials said that whenever any unidentified flying or drifting object is reported near the international border or the Line of Control, security forces immediately initiate standard operating procedures. These include securing the location, examining the recovered object, and conducting area searches if required.
Police and security agencies continue to monitor border districts closely to ensure that any suspicious material is investigated promptly. Authorities have reiterated that while many such recoveries eventually prove to be harmless, detailed verification remains an essential part of maintaining border security and preventing potential misuse by anti-national elements.
