Parliament – The Lok Sabha is scheduled for an important day of legislative business on Wednesday, with the government preparing to introduce and debate several significant Bills covering civil registration, examination reforms, judicial administration, and parliamentary committee work.
The government’s agenda includes the introduction of the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The proposed legislation is listed in the revised business schedule for the House and is expected to focus on updating the legal framework governing the registration of births and deaths across the country. Alongside this, lawmakers will also continue discussions on measures intended to strengthen the integrity of public examinations.
Focus Turns to Anti-Paper Leak Legislation
A major highlight of the day’s proceedings will be the continued consideration of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. Union Minister Jitendra Singh is expected to move the Bill for discussion and seek its passage in the Lok Sabha.
The legislation is aimed at strengthening safeguards against examination-related fraud and malpractice, an issue that has drawn nationwide attention following several reported paper leak incidents in recent years. The proposed amendments seek to reinforce the legal framework designed to protect the credibility of competitive examinations conducted across India.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is also expected to participate in the debate around midday. According to the day’s schedule, he is likely to present the opposition’s views on the proposed anti-paper leak legislation, with opposition parties anticipated to question the government’s response to recent examination controversies and suggest further measures for ensuring transparency.
Supreme Court Judges Bill Also on Agenda
The Lok Sabha is also set to consider the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will move the legislation for discussion and approval.
At the same time, opposition members have submitted a statutory resolution objecting to the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance issued by the President in May 2026. The resolution has been brought forward by MPs including Sougata Ray of the Trinamool Congress, NK Premachandran of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Congress MP Dean Kuriakose, who have expressed reservations over the ordinance route adopted before the Bill’s introduction in Parliament.
Ministers to Present Departmental Reports
Several Union ministers are scheduled to table official papers relating to the functioning of their respective ministries during the House proceedings.
Among those expected to present documents are Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Commerce Jitin Prasada, and Minister of State for Rural Development Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani. The papers will cover subjects linked to ministries such as Earth Sciences, Electronics and Information Technology, Communications, and other departments as part of routine parliamentary business.
Extension Sought for Joint Parliamentary Committee
Members from both the ruling party and the opposition will jointly seek additional time for a parliamentary committee examining two important legislative proposals.
BJP MP PP Chaudhary and Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav are expected to move a motion requesting an extension for the Joint Committee to submit its report on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, along with the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. If approved, the committee will be given time until the Winter Session of 2026 to complete its work.
Standing Committee Recommendations to Be Reviewed
The House agenda also includes statements from Union ministers regarding the implementation of recommendations made by various parliamentary standing committees.
These updates are expected to cover issues such as tackling fake news, reviewing developments in the sugar industry, and monitoring grants related to science and technology. Ministers, including Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan and Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey, are scheduled to brief the House on the progress made in implementing committee recommendations across different sectors.
