Panjab University – Negligence Case Registered After PhD Scholar Dies in Electrocution Incident
Panjab University –A negligence case has been registered after the death of a Panjab University PhD scholar, while authorities have announced financial assistance for the victim’s family and launched an investigation into the incident.
A case of causing death by negligence was registered on Wednesday in connection with the death of a 28-year-old PhD scholar who allegedly lost her life due to electrocution on the Panjab University campus in Chandigarh. Police said the First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Sector 11 police station, and investigators have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. The victim, identified as Jyoti, was pursuing her doctoral studies in the Department of Microbiology.
University Announces Relief for Family
Following discussions with Jyoti’s family late Tuesday night, Panjab University announced financial assistance amounting to Rs 16 lakh along with employment for her brother. According to university officials, Rs 5 lakh will be provided from the Vice Chancellor’s discretionary fund, while the remaining Rs 11 lakh will be released through the office of the Dean Student Welfare (DSW).
The university also confirmed that Jyoti’s brother, who has completed Class 12 and holds an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) qualification in Electrical trade, will be offered a position as an electrician in accordance with Punjab government recruitment rules.
Administration Expresses Support
In an official statement, the university expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and extended condolences over the loss. The administration said the financial assistance and employment support were being provided as compassionate measures under the applicable regulations. Officials added that the institution stands with the family during this difficult period and hopes the support will provide some relief.
Police Investigation Underway
Police officials stated that Jyoti’s family has agreed to a post-mortem examination, which is expected to help determine the exact sequence of events leading to her death. Investigators are also examining the condition of electrical infrastructure in the area where the incident occurred.
According to preliminary information, Jyoti was walking from her hostel towards her department on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall had reportedly caused waterlogging on the regular pathway, prompting her to take an alternative unpaved route. During this journey, she is believed to have come into contact with an electric current, which police suspect may have originated from a nearby electrical junction box.
She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared her dead after her arrival.
Students Demand Accountability
The incident triggered widespread protests on the Panjab University campus, with students expressing concern over campus safety and electrical maintenance. Demonstrators gathered outside the Vice Chancellor’s office and staged a sit-in protest, demanding strict action against those responsible for maintaining the university’s electrical infrastructure.
Student groups also called for a transparent and time-bound investigation into the incident. Along with seeking accountability, protesters urged the university administration to ensure adequate compensation for the victim’s family and implement stronger safety measures across the campus to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to assess whether any lapses in maintenance or safety protocols contributed to the fatal incident. The case has drawn attention to the need for improved infrastructure management, particularly during the monsoon season when waterlogging and exposed electrical systems can pose significant risks.
Police said further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation, while university officials have assured full cooperation with law enforcement agencies throughout the inquiry.
