Delhi Police – FIR Filed Over Social Media Posts Targeting PM and Constitutional Authorities
Delhi Police –Delhi Police has initiated legal proceedings after registering a case over alleged objectionable posts shared online that were directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other constitutional authorities.
The Delhi Police has filed a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with a series of social media posts that allegedly contained defamatory and objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other constitutional officeholders. According to official sources, investigators have also begun efforts to identify the individuals responsible for uploading the disputed content across various online platforms.
Investigation Linked to Protest-Related Content
Officials familiar with the matter said that a significant share of the content currently under investigation was reportedly circulated during a protest held at Jantar Mantar by the Cockroach Janta Party. The police are examining whether the posts violated provisions of existing criminal laws governing online communication and public conduct.
The FIR has been registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell. Authorities have invoked legal provisions related to criminal intimidation, public mischief, and defamation as part of the ongoing investigation.
Notices Sent to Social Media Platforms
As the inquiry progresses, Delhi Police has issued formal notices to X and several other social media platforms. The authorities have instructed these intermediaries to remove the content identified during the investigation and provide information related to the accounts that originally uploaded the material.
According to officials, the notices direct the platforms to immediately delete the disputed posts or videos while also sharing complete registration details associated with the concerned user accounts. Investigators have requested information including the account holder’s full name, residential address, contact number, email address, and any other relevant registration records available with the platform.
Police Seek Technical Account Information
In addition to user identification details, investigators have also sought technical records associated with the accounts. These include login and logout history, timestamps of account activity, and other digital information that could assist authorities in tracing the origin and movement of the content under investigation.
Officials said these technical records are considered important for establishing the sequence of events and identifying those responsible for creating or distributing the alleged material.
Complaints Prompted Police Action
The police action follows complaints alleging that offensive and abusive language targeting the Prime Minister appeared in online posts shared during student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The complaints also referred to content circulated after police action connected with the July 20 Chalo Sansad march.
Authorities stated that the investigation aims to determine whether the posts crossed the legal threshold for offences under applicable laws while ensuring that the matter is examined through established legal procedures.
Continuous Monitoring of Online Platforms
Delhi Police officials said their dedicated social media monitoring teams have been regularly tracking online platforms to identify content that may violate legal provisions. Whenever objectionable material is detected, notices are issued to the concerned social media companies seeking prompt removal of such posts.
According to officials, multiple posts and videos containing abusive language directed at the Prime Minister have already been removed after platforms received official notices. The monitoring process remains active, with cyber experts and social media investigators continuing to review online activity connected to the protests for any additional content that may require legal scrutiny or further investigation.
