Paneer – Maharashtra Enforces Statewide Ban on Analogue Paneer to Protect Consumers
Paneer – Maharashtra has introduced a strict prohibition on analogue paneer across the state, reinforcing food safety measures and consumer protection standards.
In a significant policy decision focused on food safety, the Maharashtra government has prohibited all activities related to analogue paneer, also known as artificial or non-dairy paneer. The restriction applies to its production, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution and sale throughout the state. With this move, Maharashtra has become the second Indian state, after Chhattisgarh, to introduce a complete ban on the product. Authorities believe the decision will help reduce the circulation of misleading food items and strengthen public confidence in dairy products.
Official Order Takes Immediate Effect
The ban came into force immediately after an official notification was issued by Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe on July 30. The order bars businesses from manufacturing, processing, packing, storing, transporting or selling analogue paneer anywhere in Maharashtra. It also prohibits wholesalers, retailers and food vendors from offering the product for sale within the state. Officials have directed enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with the new regulation.
Misrepresentation of Products Will Invite Legal Action
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that presenting analogue paneer as genuine dairy paneer amounts to misleading consumers. Such practices are considered unfair under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Businesses or individuals found violating the order by falsely marketing artificial paneer as dairy-based products will face legal proceedings. The administration has warned that inspections and enforcement activities will be intensified to prevent violations.
Penalties Specified Under Food Safety Law
The Food Safety and Standards Act contains strict provisions for offences involving unsafe or misleading food products. Depending on the seriousness of the violation, offenders may be sentenced to imprisonment for up to six months and fined as much as ₹1 lakh. In more severe cases, where the consumption of unsafe food leads to the death of a consumer, the law provides for life imprisonment along with a minimum financial penalty of ₹10 lakh. Authorities have reiterated that these provisions will be applied wherever necessary to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
Demand for Ban Had Earlier Reached the Assembly
The issue of analogue paneer had previously been discussed in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during the last legislative session. Several lawmakers had expressed concerns over the increasing availability of artificial paneer and its potential impact on consumers. They urged the state government to introduce a complete prohibition to prevent confusion between genuine dairy products and non-dairy substitutes. The latest decision reflects those concerns and marks the government’s response to the demand raised by legislators.
Focus on Consumer Health and Fair Food Practices
Officials have described the ban as an important step toward improving food quality standards and protecting consumers from deceptive trade practices. By restricting the circulation of analogue paneer, the government aims to ensure that people purchasing paneer receive authentic dairy products instead of substitutes sold under misleading labels.
