Congress Targets Home Minister Over Defection Claims
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that efforts were being made to persuade elected representatives from opposition parties to switch sides. According to Ramesh, individuals who secured electoral victories on platforms opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were now being approached with attractive offers to join the ruling party.
In a social media post, the Congress general secretary claimed that such attempts reflected a broader strategy aimed at weakening opposition forces. He suggested that the campaign had intensified following recent political developments in Parliament and argued that the incentives allegedly being offered to lawmakers were unusually substantial.
Allegations of Coordinated Political Strategy
Expanding on his criticism, Ramesh accused the Home Minister of orchestrating a carefully structured effort designed to appeal to leaders with different political and personal interests. He claimed that the alleged campaign was being carried out through customized approaches aimed at convincing opposition representatives to cross over to the BJP.
Despite the accusations, Ramesh expressed confidence that the larger objective behind such efforts would not be achieved. His remarks added to the ongoing political debate over party loyalty, defections, and the stability of opposition alliances ahead of future electoral contests.
Speculation Grows Around Shiv Sena (UBT)
The Congress leader’s comments coincided with growing speculation surrounding the future of several members of the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra. Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut also voiced concerns over alleged attempts to influence lawmakers. Through a social media post, he claimed that substantial sums of money were being discussed as part of efforts to attract Members of Parliament from Maharashtra. Raut described the reports as disturbing and said such developments raised serious questions about the health of democratic politics.
Focus on Parliamentary Recognition
Political observers have also closely followed Raut’s recent visit to New Delhi. The trip fueled speculation that he could engage with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla regarding any possible move by a section of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs to seek separate recognition within Parliament.
Although no official confirmation has emerged regarding such a development, discussions surrounding a potential breakaway group have continued to dominate political conversations in Maharashtra. The uncertainty has further intensified attention on the internal dynamics of the party led by Uddhav Thackeray.
Turbulence Reported Within Trinamool Congress
At the same time, political realignment has also been reported within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). A group of 20 rebel MPs recently met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and announced their decision to merge with the National Confederation of Progressive India (NCPI), a registered but unrecognized political party based in Tripura.
One of the rebel lawmakers, Arup Chakraborty, stated that the faction viewed the move as an effort to reform and reorganize the political structure it had been associated with. He also indicated that the group intended to pursue control over the party’s election symbol.
Anti-Defection Law Debate Intensifies
The leadership of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has strongly opposed the move, describing it as a violation of anti-defection provisions. Party representatives have maintained that the merger lacks legal validity and have questioned the legitimacy of the rebel faction’s claims.
The developments in both Maharashtra and the Trinamool Congress have once again brought the issue of political defections into national focus.
