Monsoon – Southwest Monsoon Pushes Northeast Towards Extended Wet Spell
Monsoon – The arrival of the southwest monsoon is expected to bring a prolonged period of rain across several northeastern states, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy precipitation over the next five to six days. Along with persistent rainfall, the region is likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning activity and strong winds as monsoon conditions strengthen further.

Monsoon Expansion Expected Across More Areas
Meteorologists said atmospheric conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to spread into additional parts of Northeast India over the next few days. The seasonal weather system officially reached Kerala on Thursday and has already advanced into parts of the Bay of Bengal, creating conditions that support increased rainfall across the northeastern region.
The IMD noted that the advancing monsoon is likely to intensify weather activity, leading to widespread rain and unstable atmospheric conditions in several states.
Rain and Thunderstorms Forecast Throughout the Week
According to the latest forecast, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to witness widespread light to moderate rainfall during the coming week. Many areas may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds.
Wind speeds could range between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour in some locations, particularly on June 6 and June 7. Weather officials have advised residents to remain alert during periods of strong winds and lightning.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Multiple States
The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya on June 4 and 5, with another spell expected around June 10. Between June 6 and June 9, some locations in these states may receive very heavy rainfall.
Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to face intense weather conditions. Forecasts indicate very heavy rain on June 4 and again from June 6 to June 9, while heavy showers are expected on June 5 and June 10.
Meanwhile, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rainfall at several places from June 5 through June 10.
Recent Weather Activity Signals Intensifying Conditions
Weather observations recorded during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday showed that the region has already begun experiencing significant rainfall activity. Arunachal Pradesh reported very heavy rain in isolated locations, while parts of Assam and Meghalaya received heavy showers.
Among the highest rainfall figures reported was Badatighat in Assam, which recorded 10 centimetres of rain. In addition, meteorological stations registered wind gusts reaching up to 52 kilometres per hour in certain areas.
Authorities Warn of Localised Impacts
Officials have cautioned that continued heavy rainfall could lead to water accumulation in low-lying localities, temporary flooding, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility on roads. Landslide risks may also increase in hilly and vulnerable regions where saturated soil conditions develop.
Residents have been encouraged to closely follow official weather updates and exercise caution during thunderstorms and periods of intense rain.
Advisory Issued for Farming Community
The weather department has also released agrometeorological guidance for farmers across the northeastern states. Agricultural experts have advised growers to maintain efficient drainage systems in their fields to prevent waterlogging.
Farmers have additionally been urged to store harvested crops in protected locations and take preventive measures to minimise losses from expected heavy rainfall episodes during the coming days.
