Monsoon Alert – Mumbai Faces Flooding as Heavy Rain Disrupts Daily Life
Monsoon Alert – Mumbai witnessed relentless overnight rainfall that led to water accumulation in several parts of the city, prompting authorities to issue weather warnings and step up monitoring efforts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned residents to remain cautious as intense rain activity continued across Mumbai and nearby districts on Wednesday.
Rain Warning Issued for Mumbai and Nearby Districts
The IMD released an Orange Alert for Mumbai and surrounding regions, including Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg. Officials forecast moderate to heavy rain spells during the morning hours and advised citizens to stay alert while travelling or moving through vulnerable areas.
Weather authorities also maintained a broader alert system across the Konkan region. Mumbai, its suburban areas and Palghar remained under a Red Alert, while Thane was placed under an Orange Alert. Yellow Alerts were issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, indicating the likelihood of continued rainfall throughout the day.
Waterlogging Reported in Several Areas
Continuous showers through the night caused significant waterlogging in low-lying pockets of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Civic authorities reported that the Andheri subway was submerged due to excessive rainwater accumulation, forcing officials to suspend vehicular movement through the underpass.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said emergency teams were deployed to monitor affected locations and manage traffic around flooded stretches. Residents in several neighbourhoods faced delays and inconvenience as roads became difficult to navigate.
Rainfall Data Highlights Intensity of Showers
According to rainfall records maintained by the BMC, Mumbai received an average of 56 mm of rain between 8:00 am and 11:00 pm on June 23. Eastern suburbs recorded around 23 mm, while western suburbs registered approximately 33 mm during the same period.
Several locations in western Mumbai experienced particularly intense rainfall during the late evening hours. Areas in Kandivali, Malad, Juhu, Santacruz and nearby localities recorded notable precipitation levels within a short span, contributing to localized flooding and drainage challenges.
Train Services Continue Without Major Disruptions
Despite the adverse weather conditions, suburban railway services continued to operate normally during peak morning hours. Western Railway officials confirmed that trains on important routes, including the Harbour Line and the Churchgate-Dahanu section, remained on schedule.
Authorities noted that rail operations across the city had not been significantly affected by the rainfall, providing some relief to daily commuters who depend heavily on Mumbai’s rail network.
Civic Teams Focus on Safety Measures
Municipal officials acknowledged that the flooded Andheri subway remains one of the most challenging locations during heavy rain events. Teams have been stationed at the site to prevent motorists from entering dangerous waterlogged sections.
Officials said repeated efforts are being made to stop vehicles from attempting to cross the flooded underpass. In one incident, a vehicle became stranded in the middle of the submerged stretch, requiring assistance from civic personnel to ensure the driver’s safety.
Emergency response teams continue to monitor the area around the clock while exploring measures to reduce risk and improve traffic management during periods of intense rainfall.
Residents Raise Concerns Over Drainage Problems
Some residents expressed frustration over recurring flooding issues, pointing to blocked drainage systems as a major concern. Commuters reported difficulties reaching schools, colleges and workplaces as water accumulated on roads and pedestrian routes.
Local authorities have assured citizens that drainage and disaster management teams remain active across the city to address emerging problems and respond quickly to emergencies.

Meteorological officials have indicated that wet weather conditions are likely to persist along Maharashtra’s western coastline over the coming days.
