MedicalInnovation – Delhi Doctors Remove Stuck Denture Using Laser Endoscopy

MedicalInnovation –  Doctors at a leading hospital in the national capital have successfully removed a denture that had become stuck deep inside a patient’s food pipe, using a minimally invasive endoscopic technique. The procedure helped the patient avoid major surgery and recover without complications.

Patient Admitted With Severe Symptoms

The case involved a man who was rushed to the hospital after experiencing intense breathing difficulty, throat pain, and an inability to swallow. Medical evaluation revealed that he had accidentally swallowed his denture, which had traveled down and become lodged inside his oesophagus.

Doctors noted that the situation was critical because the object was not only blocking the food pipe but was also positioned dangerously close to the airway. This led to discomfort in the chest area and increased the risk of further complications if not addressed quickly.

Imaging Reveals High-Risk Obstruction

Detailed imaging studies were carried out to determine the exact position of the denture. The scans showed that the dental prosthesis was firmly stuck in the upper part of the oesophagus, just below the junction where the food pipe meets the windpipe.

The presence of sharp metallic hooks on the denture made the case more complex. These edges posed a serious threat of internal injury, including the possibility of tearing the delicate lining of the oesophagus during removal.

Conventional Methods Prove Ineffective

Initially, the medical team attempted to extract the denture using standard endoscopic tools such as forceps. However, these efforts were unsuccessful due to the tight positioning of the object and the risk of causing further damage.

According to the doctors, continuing with traditional methods could have led to serious complications, including bleeding or perforation of the oesophagus. Given the risks, the team decided to shift to a more advanced approach.

Laser-Assisted Endoscopic Procedure Used

The doctors opted for a specialized endoscopic technique that involved the use of a laser cutter. This method allowed them to carefully break down and remove the denture without causing harm to surrounding tissues.

The laser-assisted approach provided better precision and control, making it possible to safely extract the object from a sensitive area. The procedure was carried out without the need for open surgery, significantly reducing recovery time and associated risks.

Successful Outcome and Recovery

Following the procedure, the patient showed steady improvement and was able to recover without any major complications. Doctors confirmed that the oesophagus remained intact, and no additional surgical intervention was required.

Medical experts described the case as particularly challenging due to the location and structure of the lodged denture. They highlighted that the use of advanced endoscopic technology played a crucial role in ensuring a positive outcome.

Growing Importance of Minimally Invasive Techniques

This case underscores the increasing role of minimally invasive procedures in modern medical practice. Techniques such as laser-assisted endoscopy are proving to be effective alternatives to traditional surgery, especially in complex situations.

Doctors emphasized that early medical attention and access to advanced treatment facilities can significantly improve patient outcomes in such emergencies. They also advised individuals with dental prosthetics to exercise caution to prevent accidental ingestion.
