Justice – Search Intensifies as Ramban Youth Case Sparks Public Outcry
Justice – The search for a young man who went missing in a stream in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district has entered its fourth day, with authorities continuing efforts to locate his body amid growing public concern.
The incident involves 28-year-old Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Mundkhal in the Pogal area of Ramban. According to officials, he was returning to his village from Jammu on Sunday with a milch cow and two calves when he was allegedly chased by a group of suspected cow vigilantes near Ramsoo along the Srinagar–Jammu highway. During the confrontation, he reportedly jumped into a nearby stream and has been missing since.
Ongoing Search Operation Faces Natural Challenges
A large-scale search effort has been underway since the day of the incident. Multiple agencies, including teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police units, quick response teams, and civil administration officials, have been deployed at the site near Makerkote in Ramsoo.
Despite continuous efforts, rescuers have not yet been able to recover the body. Officials say the strong current of the stream and its considerable depth are making operations difficult. The search is carried out during daylight hours and paused overnight due to safety concerns.
Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta confirmed that the operation will continue without interruption until the body is located. Authorities have assured the family that every possible resource is being used to bring closure to the case.
Family Background and Community Response
Tanveer’s father is currently serving as a Special Police Officer with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, adding a personal dimension to the tragedy for the law enforcement community.
Meanwhile, the incident has triggered widespread anger among local residents. Protesters, including both men and women, gathered in the Ramsoo area and staged demonstrations on the Srinagar–Jammu highway. The protests led to temporary disruptions in vehicular movement as people demanded justice and accountability.
Many residents have called for strict legal action against those allegedly involved, describing the incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.
Investigation Underway with Arrests Made
Police have launched a formal investigation into the case, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) examining all aspects of the incident. So far, four individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the case.
Senior police officials stated that the investigation includes reviewing digital records and gathering other forms of evidence to establish the sequence of events. Authorities have emphasized that no angle will be overlooked, including the role of suspected vigilante groups.
Government Responds, Calls for Accountability
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed serious concern over the incident. He strongly criticised the actions of individuals who take the law into their own hands, questioning the authority under which such acts are carried out.
He highlighted that transporting livestock does not automatically imply illegal activity and warned against attempts to create disorder through unlawful behavior. The Chief Minister made it clear that such actions would not be tolerated in the Union Territory.
He also urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who oversees law and order, to ensure that those responsible are dealt with firmly. According to him, decisive action is necessary to send a clear message that vigilantism has no place in the region.
A Rare and Sensitive Case in the Region
Officials have noted that this is the first reported incident of its kind in Jammu and Kashmir, making it particularly sensitive. The case has drawn attention not only due to its circumstances but also because of its potential implications for public safety and law enforcement.
As the search continues and the investigation progresses, authorities are under pressure to deliver answers and ensure justice. For now, the focus remains on recovering Tanveer’s body and completing a thorough inquiry into the events that led to his disappearance.
