Grand Procession Begins in Puri
The internationally known Jagannath Rath Yatra officially commenced on Thursday in Puri, Odisha, drawing massive crowds of devotees from different parts of India. The annual procession is regarded as one of the country’s most significant religious events, with lakhs of pilgrims gathering to witness Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra begin their ceremonial journey through the city.

The Rath Yatra holds exceptional religious importance because it is the only time during the year when the deities of the Jagannath Temple leave the sanctum and travel outside the temple premises. According to long-standing tradition, the procession marks the annual visit of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra to the Gundicha Temple, which is believed to be the home of their aunt. The journey represents compassion, love and the belief that Lord Jagannath steps out to bless devotees without distinction of social background or cultural identity. Celebrations Extend Beyond Odisha
While Puri remains the focal point of the festival, Jagannath Rath Yatra is also celebrated with great enthusiasm in several other states. In Gujarat, the annual procession on Ashadhi Bij began from the historic Shree Jagannathji Mandir in Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur area. The chariots travelled through major parts of the city before returning to the temple later in the day.
Recognised as the second-largest Jagannath Rath Yatra in India after the Puri celebration, the Ahmedabad procession attracts lakhs of devotees every year. Pilgrims from across Gujarat and other regions participate in the event, reinforcing the festival’s enduring place among India’s most important religious and cultural traditions.
