Investigation – Ranchi Court Refuses Relief Plea in Land-Linked PMLA Case

Investigation – A Special PMLA Court in Ranchi has declined a petition filed by Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren, who sought to be discharged from a money laundering case connected to an alleged irregular acquisition of 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi.

Ranchi court pmla relief plea rejected

The court’s decision marks a significant development in an investigation being conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has alleged that the land transaction was part of a broader scheme involving fraudulent ownership and financial irregularities.

Court Finds Grounds for Trial

In its order, the court observed that the material submitted by the prosecution was sufficient at this stage to establish a prima facie case. The judge noted that the available records, witness statements, and documentary evidence could not be dismissed outright while considering the discharge application.

Additional Judicial Commissioner Yogesh Kumar stated that legal principles governing discharge petitions generally support the continuation of prosecution when the overall circumstances create reasonable suspicion requiring judicial examination during trial.

Evidence Considered During Proceedings

While reviewing the case records, the court examined complaints, supporting documents, and other circumstances cited by the Enforcement Directorate. According to the order, the evidence presented went beyond mere suspicion and indicated grounds that warrant further judicial scrutiny.

The court also clarified that objections raised by the defense, including concerns regarding the credibility of witnesses and the interpretation of evidence, can be properly evaluated only during the trial process. As a result, the request seeking discharge from the case was rejected.

Charges Likely to Be Framed Soon

Following the court’s ruling, the case is expected to move into the next stage, where charges may be formally framed against the accused individuals named in the investigation.

Hemant Soren had approached the court in December 2025, maintaining that he was innocent and requesting that the proceedings against him be dropped. However, the court found sufficient grounds to allow the prosecution to continue.

ED Investigation and Earlier Arrests

The Enforcement Directorate has conducted extensive inquiries in connection with the alleged land scam. Investigators carried out multiple search operations and questioned several individuals as part of the probe.

According to the agency, a charge sheet has been filed against nearly 18 people, including Hemant Soren. The accused list also includes several land dealers and others allegedly linked to the disputed land transaction.

The investigation led to the arrest of multiple individuals. Hemant Soren was taken into custody by the ED on January 31, 2024, after a round of questioning. He later secured bail from the Jharkhand High Court on June 28, 2024.

Political Background of the Case

Before his arrest in 2024, Soren stepped down from the post of Chief Minister. His resignation came amid mounting legal challenges related to the ED investigation.

Later that year, the alliance between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Congress recorded a strong performance in the state assembly elections. Following the electoral victory, Soren returned to the Chief Minister’s office and resumed leadership of the state government.

The latest court order ensures that the legal proceedings linked to the alleged land acquisition case will continue, with the prosecution and defense expected to present their arguments in greater detail during the upcoming trial stages.
