Infrastructure – A large-scale clearance operation was carried out in northwest Delhi on Sunday as authorities moved ahead with plans to widen Road No. 320 in the Shalimar Bagh area. The exercise focused on removing structures identified as encroachments along the proposed expansion corridor. Officials stated that the initiative is aimed at improving road infrastructure and easing traffic movement in the locality.
Early Morning Operation Conducted Under Tight Security
The demolition drive started at approximately 4 a.m. and was accompanied by extensive security arrangements. Police personnel and paramilitary forces were deployed across the area to ensure the process remained peaceful and orderly. Senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police and other top officials, monitored the operation on the ground and reviewed security measures throughout the exercise.
Around 150 Structures Marked for Removal
According to district administration officials, nearly 150 constructions fall within the designated right-of-way required for the road expansion project. These structures were identified during official assessments conducted as part of the infrastructure development plan.
Authorities explained that the land is needed to facilitate the widening of Road No. 320, a project expected to improve transportation connectivity and support future urban growth in the region.
Action Linked to Court-Endorsed Proceedings
District Magistrate (Central-North) S.S. Parihar stated that the clearance operation is being implemented in accordance with legal directions related to unauthorized constructions in Haiderpur village. The matter had undergone judicial review, and the relevant orders were subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court.
Officials emphasized that all actions are being taken within the framework of existing legal procedures and administrative guidelines.
Notices Issued Before Final Administrative Orders
The administration noted that affected residents had been informed well in advance. Public notices regarding the proposed action were issued in January 2026, providing an opportunity for individuals to submit objections and representations.
After examining the responses received, the Land Acquisition Collector issued a formal order on March 20. Authorities further stated that later legal challenges were dismissed after the government informed the court that the acquisition process had been completed, compensation amounts had been deposited, and possession of the land had already been secured.
Rehabilitation Measures Announced for Eligible Families
Officials said the demolition exercise will continue until all identified encroachments within the notified area are removed. Alongside the clearance process, the administration has announced rehabilitation support for families meeting eligibility requirements.
Under the assistance package, qualifying households will receive a one-time ex-gratia payment of ₹3 lakh. In addition, families that do not have alternative accommodation within Delhi will be provided temporary housing at Savda Ghevra under a licence-based arrangement for a period of up to 11 months.
Road Expansion Project Moves Forward
Authorities maintain that the land clearance is an essential step toward completing the road widening project. The administration has assured that rehabilitation benefits will be extended in accordance with established rules while infrastructure work proceeds in the designated zone.
