The prime minister said the three-country visit would also help maintain the recent momentum in India’s bilateral relations with each of the partner nations. His itinerary includes Indonesia from July 6 to 8, followed by engagements in Melbourne and Auckland.

Indonesia Visit to Highlight Strategic and Cultural Links

Modi will begin the tour in Indonesia at the invitation of President Prabowo Subianto. The visit will be his first bilateral trip to the country since India and Indonesia raised their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Modi’s 2018 visit.

In his departure statement, Modi said India and Indonesia share long-standing civilisational connections and close people-to-people relations. He said the visit would support cooperation across the broad range of areas covered by the bilateral partnership.

President Prabowo had earlier visited India as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025. Modi said the upcoming meetings would build on that engagement and deepen cooperation between the two countries.

Prambanan Temple Visit Planned in Yogyakarta

During the Indonesia leg, Modi is scheduled to meet members of the Indian community. He will also visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta with President Prabowo.

The prime minister described the temple complex as an important reflection of the historical and cultural connections between India and Indonesia. The visit is expected to underline the role of shared heritage in the relationship between the two countries.

Modi linked the Indonesia visit with India’s wider regional approach, including the MAHASAGAR vision. The term stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions and reflects India’s focus on security, development and cooperation across the Indian Ocean region.

Australia Talks to Cover Defence, Trade and Technology

After Indonesia, Modi will travel to Melbourne at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The two leaders are expected to review progress under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Modi said his discussions with Albanese would cover defence and security, trade and investment, education, mobility and public engagement. India and Australia have expanded cooperation in recent years as both countries seek stronger coordination in the Indo-Pacific.

The visit is also expected to include discussions on emerging and critical technologies, as well as sports and sports science. Modi said these sectors offered additional opportunities to broaden the bilateral relationship.

He will also meet members of the Indian diaspora in Melbourne. According to the prime minister, the Indian community has made a meaningful contribution to the strategic partnership between India and Australia.

New Zealand Leg to Focus on Economic Engagement

The final part of the tour will take Modi to Auckland, where he will meet New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The visit follows Luxon’s trip to India in March 2025 and is expected to build on the progress made during that engagement.

Modi said talks with Luxon would focus on expanding economic, trade and commercial cooperation. India and New Zealand have also expressed their intention to strengthen trade links through a proposed Free Trade Agreement.

The prime minister said the Indian diaspora has played an important role in strengthening ties between the two countries. He is expected to address a large gathering of the Indian community in Auckland during the visit.

India’s diplomatic outreach across the three countries is expected to reinforce its regional partnerships while supporting greater cooperation in trade, security, technology, education and cultural exchange.
