Heatwave – Andhra Pradesh is currently experiencing a severe spell of heat, with temperatures soaring past 44 degrees Celsius in several areas. The rising heat has prompted the State Disaster Management Authority to release urgent safety guidelines, urging residents to take precautions against the ongoing heatwave.
Rising Temperatures Across Multiple Districts
Officials reported that some of the highest temperatures were recorded on Tuesday, with Kambham in Markapuram district and Ontimitta in Kadapa registering a scorching 44.3°C. The intense heat has not been isolated to just a few locations. Data shows that across 16 districts, around 140 mandals experienced temperatures exceeding 41°C, indicating a widespread impact of the heatwave across the state.
Weather experts have noted that such prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Authorities have advised people to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours and to stay hydrated.
Forecast Indicates Continued Heat and Hot Winds
Looking ahead, weather forecasts for Wednesday suggest that conditions may remain harsh. Around 21 mandals in Vizianagaram and Manyam districts are expected to face severe hot winds. Additionally, another seven mandals are likely to experience strong hot winds, further increasing discomfort levels for residents.
These hot winds, often referred to as dry and scorching gusts, can lead to dehydration and heat-related illnesses if proper precautions are not taken. Officials have stressed the importance of wearing light clothing, consuming adequate fluids, and taking frequent breaks when working outdoors.
Possibility of Rain and Thunderstorms in Some Areas
While much of the state continues to battle extreme heat, there is a slight possibility of weather relief in certain regions. Meteorological conditions indicate that a trough extending from Rayalaseema through Tamil Nadu to Kanyakumari could bring light rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in parts of Alluri, Polavaram, Kurnool, Nandyal, and Anantapur districts.
However, authorities have issued caution alongside this forecast. Farmers and cattle herders, in particular, have been warned against seeking shelter under trees during sudden thunderstorms, as lightning strikes pose a serious risk.
Advisory for Public Safety and Awareness
State officials have emphasized the need for constant vigilance during this period of extreme weather. Residents are being encouraged to stay informed through official updates and follow safety advisories closely. Awareness about symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke has also been highlighted as a key preventive measure.
Simple steps such as avoiding direct sunlight, using protective gear like hats or umbrellas, and ensuring proper ventilation indoors can make a significant difference in coping with the heat. Authorities have also urged community-level awareness to ensure that those most at risk receive timely assistance.
