Governance – Madhya Pradesh Launches Statewide Fortnight to Honour Syama Prasad Mookerjee
Governance – Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced a statewide fortnight-long observance from June 24 to July 6 to mark the birth anniversary and martyrdom day of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The programme is expected to bring together civic bodies, government departments, youth groups, and local communities through a series of public outreach and welfare activities across the state.

Chief Minister Addresses Civic Representatives
The announcement was made during a virtual interaction with mayors and chairpersons of municipal bodies from the Chief Minister’s residence on Monday. During the address, Yadav highlighted Mookerjee’s contribution to national unity and described his life as an enduring example of dedication to the country’s integrity and democratic values.
According to the Chief Minister, the commemorative period is intended not only to pay tribute to Mookerjee’s legacy but also to encourage public participation in activities that promote social responsibility and community welfare.
Tribute to a Political and Educational Visionary
Recalling Mookerjee’s life and achievements, Yadav said he was a distinguished educationist, parliamentarian, thinker, and political leader who laid the foundation of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He noted that Mookerjee consistently placed national interests above political considerations and worked to strengthen ideological commitment and organisational development.
Born on July 6, 1901, Mookerjee is remembered for his opposition to the special constitutional provisions that were then applicable to Jammu and Kashmir. He died on June 23, 1953, and is regarded by many as a significant figure in India’s political history.
Focus on Youth Engagement
A major component of the fortnight will be youth-oriented programmes designed to introduce younger generations to Mookerjee’s ideas and public life. The Chief Minister directed local bodies to organise youth conferences, essay-writing competitions, interactive discussions, and dialogue sessions.
Officials believe these activities will provide students and young citizens with opportunities to learn about leadership, civic participation, and the importance of contributing to society through constructive engagement.
Public Welfare Activities Planned
The state government has also asked municipal bodies to conduct a range of community-focused initiatives during the observance period. These include tree plantation campaigns, cleanliness drives, blood donation programmes, and health camps aimed at benefiting local residents.
The administration expects these efforts to strengthen public awareness about environmental protection, healthcare, and voluntary service while encouraging greater citizen involvement in community development.
Naming of Public Spaces Under Consideration
As part of the commemorative initiatives, civic authorities have been instructed to identify suitable roads, parks, and public spaces that may be named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The Chief Minister clarified that such proposals should be processed in accordance with established procedures and necessary approvals.
Statewide Participation Expected
The government anticipates broad participation from local bodies and various departments throughout the fortnight. Officials say the observance will serve as an occasion to remember Mookerjee’s contribution to public life while promoting the values of service, good governance, education, and nation-building.
Through a combination of awareness programmes and welfare initiatives, the state aims to connect citizens with the legacy of one of the prominent figures associated with modern Indian political thought
