Diplomacy – India and China took another step toward improving diplomatic engagement as senior leaders from both countries held detailed discussions on the sidelines of a major BRICS security meeting in New Delhi. The talks focused on recent developments in bilateral relations and efforts aimed at fostering greater understanding and cooperation between the two neighbors.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday described the meeting between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as constructive and future-oriented. According to the government, both sides exchanged views on a range of issues while reviewing progress made toward the gradual normalization of relations.
MEA Highlights Positive Direction in Dialogue
During a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the discussions reflected a shared willingness to maintain engagement and strengthen mutual trust. He noted that NSA Doval emphasized the importance of stable and predictable relations, stating that such an approach helps build confidence and improves understanding between the two countries.
The spokesperson added that the dialogue focused on long-term engagement and explored ways to continue improving ties through sustained communication. The meeting took place on Monday during the BRICS National Security Advisors’ Meeting being hosted by India.

Officials from both nations examined recent progress in diplomatic relations and acknowledged ongoing efforts to restore normal engagement. The interaction was attended by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong, and other senior officials.
The discussions come as New Delhi and Beijing continue working through issues that have affected relations in recent years while also seeking opportunities for cooperation in areas of shared interest.
China Calls for Broader Cooperation
According to remarks shared by Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong on social media, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed the importance of viewing India-China relations from a long-term and global perspective. He said both countries, home to the world’s largest populations, should expand cooperation to support their development goals and contribute to broader international growth.
Wang also referred to the consensus reached by the leadership of both countries and called for practical steps to translate those understandings into meaningful cooperation. He emphasized the potential role of India and China in supporting modernization efforts across developing nations and the wider Global South.
Support for India’s Role in BRICS
During the meeting, Wang expressed support for India’s responsibilities as the rotating chair of BRICS and indicated China’s willingness to work closely with New Delhi to strengthen the grouping’s role and influence.
The Chinese side also highlighted the importance of respecting each other’s key interests and managing sensitive matters carefully. Wang reportedly stated that border-related issues should be handled in a way that does not overshadow the broader relationship between the two countries.
He further underlined the need for both governments to encourage informed public understanding and create a positive environment that supports improved bilateral engagement.
