Governance – Amit Shah Highlights Ladakh Transformation at Buddha Event
Governance – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday attended a major cultural and religious gathering in Ladakh, where he inaugurated an exhibition of sacred relics of Gautama Buddha alongside celebrations marking the 2569th Buddha Purnima. Addressing the gathering, he said the decision to grant Union Territory status to Ladakh fulfilled a long-standing aspiration of local residents and has since driven visible progress in the region.

Sacred Relics Displayed Publicly for the First Time
One of the highlights of the event was the rare public display of revered relics associated with Tathagata Buddha. These relics, which are usually preserved at a fixed location, were brought out for exhibition within the country for the first time. The display attracted attention from devotees, scholars, and visitors, adding spiritual significance to the celebrations.
Officials present at the event noted that the exposition was designed to promote cultural awareness and deepen public understanding of Buddhist heritage, particularly in a region where the faith has deep historical roots.
Ladakh’s Union Territory Status and Development Push
Speaking at the ceremony, Shah emphasized that the formation of Ladakh as a Union Territory addressed a demand that had remained unresolved for decades. He said the move has enabled more focused governance and faster implementation of development projects.
According to him, the region, once marked by limited infrastructure and slow growth, is now witnessing improvements across sectors. He described Ladakh as an example of how targeted administrative changes can accelerate progress in remote and strategically important areas.
Dairy Project Aimed at Strengthening Local Economy
During his visit, the Home Minister also announced development initiatives intended to enhance economic self-sufficiency in the region. He virtually laid the foundation stone for a dairy processing plant in Kargil with a planned capacity of 10,000 litres per day. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 25 crore.
The proposed facility is expected to support local farmers and improve milk processing capabilities, contributing to income generation and rural development. Alongside this, several dairy-related programs were launched to encourage modern practices and boost productivity.
Focus on Self-Reliance in Border Regions
Highlighting the strategic importance of Ladakh as a border territory, Shah underlined the government’s objective of promoting self-reliance. He said initiatives like the dairy plant are part of a broader plan to strengthen local economies and reduce dependency on external supplies.
He also pointed out that improving livelihoods in such regions is essential not only for economic growth but also for ensuring stability and long-term development.
Cultural and Development Goals Go Hand in Hand
The event brought together cultural celebration and policy announcements, reflecting a dual approach to Ladakh’s growth. While the relic exhibition underscored the region’s rich spiritual heritage, the development projects highlighted efforts to improve infrastructure and livelihoods.
Local leaders and officials present at the event expressed optimism that continued investment and administrative focus would further accelerate Ladakh’s transformation in the coming years.
The visit concluded with interactions between officials and community representatives, where ongoing and future projects were discussed, signaling continued engagement between the administration and local stakeholders
