The incident occurred around 5 a.m. near the Khalapur Food Mall close to Khopoli. Authorities said a container vehicle lost balance and overturned on the roadway, creating a dangerous obstruction for vehicles travelling through the stretch during the early hours.

Truck Collision Leads to Fatalities

According to preliminary information, a truck approaching the accident site collided with the overturned container. The impact proved fatal for two occupants of the truck, who died at the scene. Emergency responders were alerted immediately and rushed to the location to begin rescue and traffic management operations.

Officials are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the container overturning and the subsequent collision. The identities of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of reporting.

Elderly Woman Suffers Serious Injuries

Shortly after the initial crash, another vehicle became involved in the accident sequence. An 80-year-old woman travelling in a passing car sustained serious injuries. Rescue teams provided immediate assistance before she was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Medical authorities are monitoring her condition, while police continue gathering details related to the incident.

Traffic Congestion Extends for Several Kilometres

The accident triggered significant congestion on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, with hundreds of vehicles caught in long queues during the morning rush period. Several motorists reported extended delays as emergency crews worked to clear the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

Traffic movement was particularly affected in the Khopoli region, with congestion reportedly stretching through key sections including the Adoshi Tunnel area and parts of the Khandala Ghat route.

Missing Link Section Temporarily Closed

As a precautionary measure, authorities temporarily suspended traffic movement on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway Missing Link section following the accident. The closure was implemented to facilitate rescue efforts and allow heavy equipment to safely remove the damaged vehicles.

Commuters travelling from Lonavala toward Mumbai were redirected through alternative routes, including the main Mumbai–Pune Expressway carriageway and the old Pune–Mumbai Highway.

Restoration Work Carried Out on Priority

Highway police, along with emergency response teams, deployed cranes and recovery equipment to the site to remove the overturned container, the damaged truck, and the affected car. Officials worked continuously to restore normal traffic conditions and ensure the safety of motorists using the route.

The Mumbai–Pune Expressway serves as a critical transportation link connecting the state’s two largest cities. Incidents on this corridor often result in widespread traffic delays, highlighting the importance of road safety and careful driving, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and reaction times may be affected.

Authorities have urged motorists to follow traffic advisories and exercise caution while travelling through accident-prone stretches of the expressway. Further details are expected after the completion of the official investigation.
