ElectionViolence – TMC Alleges Worker Killed During Post-Poll Unrest
ElectionViolence – The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has accused opposition-backed groups of triggering fresh unrest in South 24 Parganas following the recent Assembly election process.

The ruling Trinamool Congress on Sunday claimed that one of its party workers was killed during incidents linked to post-poll disturbances in West Bengal. According to the party, the victim, identified as Asim Roy, died after being attacked on May 4 in the Baruipur Purba Assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas district during the vote counting period.
Party Raises Allegations Over Worker’s Death
In a statement shared on social media platform X, the party alleged that Roy was assaulted publicly in broad daylight. TMC leaders stated that details surrounding the incident were uncovered by a fact-finding team assigned to inspect areas affected by violence after the elections.
The party further claimed that the committee gathered disturbing information during its field visits. According to the statement, the findings point toward what the party described as a worsening breakdown in law and order in certain regions of the state.
TMC leaders alleged that the attack was not an isolated political clash but part of a broader pattern of intimidation allegedly carried out by elements linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has not immediately responded publicly to these specific allegations.
Questions Raised Over Police Response
The Trinamool Congress also questioned the handling of the matter by local law enforcement authorities. In its statement, the party claimed that complaints had been submitted following the incident but alleged that no prompt police action was taken.
The statement said the death of the worker had deeply affected the victim’s family and raised concerns about accountability in politically sensitive situations. The party accused authorities of failing to respond effectively despite the seriousness of the allegations.
Political violence during and after elections has remained a recurring concern in West Bengal over the years, with rival political parties often blaming each other for clashes, intimidation, and attacks on workers.
Mamata Banerjee Announces Fact-Finding Committee
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier announced the formation of a fact-finding committee to examine violence-hit regions across the state. Speaking on the issue, she said the panel would include 10 members, among them five Members of Parliament.
According to Banerjee, the committee has been tasked with visiting affected locations, gathering information from local residents, and preparing a detailed assessment of the situation on the ground.
The Chief Minister also accused political opponents of attempting to create unrest in Kolkata and nearby areas. Referring to an alleged incident involving the party headquarters, she claimed that stones were thrown at the office associated with senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.
Political Tensions Continue in West Bengal
Banerjee strongly criticised the opposition and also targeted the Election Commission over its handling of the situation. She alleged bias in the conduct of authorities during the election period and claimed that democratic norms had been affected by political hostility.
The Chief Minister warned that political misuse of power could lead to similar consequences in the future when governments change. Her remarks highlighted the growing political friction between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the state.
West Bengal has frequently witnessed heightened political confrontations during election seasons, particularly in districts considered politically sensitive. Incidents of violence often become major points of conflict between parties, leading to accusations, counter-allegations, and demands for investigations.
At present, there has been no official confirmation from investigating authorities regarding the full circumstances surrounding the death of Asim Roy. Further developments are expected as political parties continue to demand accountability and a detailed inquiry into the matter.
